Pregnancy Acne

by DollChina, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
Hi ladies, just want to see what I can do about my acne.  I never had to deal with this until I got preggo.  I do wash my face often with good product. It's mostly on my forehead and chin (just a few), never on the face.  Please help.  The Clinique acne gel doesn't really work.

Generally during pregnancy you are advised against using ANY products for it as many contain retinol, salicylic (sp)acid, or elevated amounts of vitamin A.

I feel your pain, I rarely ever break out except while I am pregnant. I simply wash my face requently with warm water and a washcloth, air dry, and let it be. I never wear foundation anyway, but I know if I were to start now it would just make matters worse ; )

Talk with your doctor and see what they recommend. Until then, I would hold off on using anything until you get the all clear.

Oh girl, tell me about it!  I never had acne until I got pregnant (34 weeks 1 day).  (BTW, they say if you have more acne during pregnancy it means it's a boy.  Something about the testosterone he's producing affecting your body...)  There isn't much of anything a doctor can prescribe you, but I have found using a facial cleanser with some sort of exfoliant in it every night before you go to bed then using neosporin on the problem areas tends to help.  I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub, which you can get at Wal-Mart or your local drug store, and I get fewer break-outs.  If I go one night without washing my face with this stuff, I pay for it in the morning.  I hope this helps some.  Good luck!

I have kind of a dumb question.  But why is that stuff no good for you when preggers??

by AndiJ78, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
salyclic acid is found in aspirin and Vitamin A/retinol has been definitively linked to bone deformities.

Hi,

If it just a salicyclic acid face wash liquid, is that also harmful.. :-O I have been using it for my acne..

by jifnif, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
i use a glycolic cleanser and i am prego.  I also use a moisturizer that has AHAs in it.  the cleanser is aquaglycolic and the moisturizer is neutrogena w/ AHAs.  salicylic in pregnancy in large quantities can cause hemorrhaging because its in the aspirin family.  it also can stop air to the baby.  its in a lot of facial products that are used for acne.  its in tendskin as well, which is for razor burn or bumps.  it would probably have to be in large quantities per my dr but just to be on the safe side they really dont know how much gets to the baby.  i know its crazy but when i get bad acne i take a dead sea salt bath and leave a wash cloth on my face so it can soak in while i relax in the tub.  salt soothes the skin and kills the bacteria.  just a suggestion.

I didnt know that.  Thanks for the info.  I WAS using Neutrogena foundation (this has salyclic acid in it).  So this is not good.  I have since switched to something else.

BABY DUST!!

wow, i didnt know neutrogena foundation had salicylic in it!!!!  in my prior post i said that my dr said its probablly in too small of an amount to effect baby so maybe ask your dr.  but i guess i would be worried to use it no matter what.  thanks for sharing that info....thats crazy!

No problem, I wish that thing slike this would be publicized more. There was a huge roundtable discussion a few years back about Vitamin A, retinol, and similar products and the link to bone deformities. It can be quite scary.

I just bought some Neutrogena face wash and ace cream and it has Benzoyl Peroxide in it, is that safe?  So I shouldn't use anything with that S. Acid stuff in it at all?

from what Andi is saying I would call the doctor to be safe.  Cause who knows what else isnt good.

by AndiJ78, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
I don't remember if that was an issue or not. put a call into your doctor or local pharmacy. Or you can google it and pregnancy and see what comes up.

Try using Burt's Bees tomoato soap and toner.  It's over 90% natural so you don't have to worry about any dangerous chemcial getting absorbed through your skin.  They also make a pore refining mask wiht green clay, which is amazing.  HTH.

I use proactiv, doc says it's fine, it is just benzoyl peroxide.  i use it sparingly.  wonder if you are right this may be a boy.  With dd, I rarely had any acne and this time, whammo!  You could connect the dots on my chin!

Doc office just called and said it's ok to use that stuff :-D

by AndiJ78, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
See, with my first son I didn't have any acne, just my second one and this time around. I figure I am having another boy anyway ; )

I'm glad some got answers about their products. I'm gonna stcik with the H2O and occasional witch hazel swabbing.

Good luck!

i never had acne until i was preg.  with my first i noticed how bad it was, and maintained my normal diet.  you know with my second i completely gave up soda and most junk and drank so much water i thought i would float away.  with this baby the second i found out i was preg. i started drinking just water, natural juices, and milk.  today i had my first pimple in the 14 weeks i've been preg.  i wonder if the water helps?

by HIS GIFT TO US, May 11, 2006 12:00AM
I never had bad breakouts til being preg. I tried the 3.99 to the 18.99 & once I had my little guy & stopped breastfeeding I used Pro-Active I know it's expensive but pimple scars are not fun to have so now I'm preg again & I asked the DR about what to use incase I start to breakout w/ this baby on the way & I was told that using Pro-Active was safe while preg although I've not gotten brave enough to use it while preg so check w/ your Dr about proactive.

Dr says you would have to use a ton before your baby would ever even know you were using it)

The stuff works great in just 2weeks I had noooo more pimples, but I would like to know someone that actually used the stuff while preg. instead of going on just what the DR says. Scars or no scars I know our goal is to have a healthy baby:) Might be worth ckecking into more.
