Pregnancy after miscarriage

by eisama, Nov 24, 2004 12:00AM
I have recently had 2 back to back miscarriages.  My doctor has now given me the okay to try for a baby after 2 normal menstrual cycles.  I took an early pregnancy test; it was positive.  I am not due for my period for a few days, but I got my HCG level and it was only 51.4.  I would only be 3 1/2 weeks along.  Is this number okay?

That sounds really good.  I tested positive 4 days before AF was due, went to the dr the next day and my HCG was 75.  I am now 17W 4D. I hope your dr will be monitoring you closely due to your past.

Thanks wisegirl, that helps.  I am so nervous this time around.  I do have an 18 month old little girl, and I am anxious to expand my family.

You said your miscarriages were back to back.  Did you wait a cycle or more between those two conceptions?  I only waited one cycle to concieve again and ended up having a second miscarriage.  I'm hoping that waiting two cycles next time would be enough.  Good Luck and keep us posted.

I have done both, waiting several cycles after one m/c and jumping right back into it after only 1 cycle. With my first son, I got pg 6 months after my 3rd m/c and with my 2nd son, I got pregnant the first cycle after my 4th m/c.

A lot of factors go into how long you should wait. Most importantly you need to make sure you are emotionally ready. Our bodies are pretty good at mending themselves, but our hearts aren't. You need to make sure that if something were to happen (such as another loss) that you and your family would be able to cope. It is a tough pill to swallow, but I truly do believe that is one of the most effective ways to know if you are ready to go again.

There are instances where you should wait 3 months, such as a late m/c, some d&c procedures or complications, or immunizations (I know with my 3rd pg, they discovered I wasn't immune to rubella, after I lost the baby, they gave me the immunization and told me to wait 3 months)

Listen to your doctor. You can always get another opinion, but for the most part they know what they are talking about : )

I only waited one cycle in between the two miscarriages, bc I was only approximately 5 - 6 weeks along both times.  My doctor suggested waited 2 cycles between trying again for this pregnancy.  My body feels much more ready this time, as I was under a great deal of stress for two previous pregnancies that ended in mc.

Thanks for the great input!

You guys are so wonderful.  I only found this web site a little over a week ago and have found it so helpful.  During the week leading up the both miscarriages, I was an emotional wreck.  I was spotting.  After both miscarriages, I felt sooo much better.  I got so much energy back.  Both times it made me realize how much the hormones take out of you.  I really felt I was emotionally ready to get pregnant again right after the first miscarriage until the spotting started again.  Then I felt I had jumped into it too soon.  Knowing that the hormones can wreck (sp?) havoc on you.  I really would like to wait a while before I try again.  I'm not sure I will even be ready again after two cycles.  I've determined I need a vacation.  :)  Just found great tickets to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun for Christmas.  It will be nice to have some time to recoup.

Keep up all the great support ladies.  It is greatly appreciated.

HI THERE

I haven't been here for a while, i miscarried end of April and had my d&c in May i was 8wks (blighted ovum) i had heard from people to wait abit, i only waited the first month and then started trying.
I started taking my vitamins as soon as i left the hospital, but i didn't fall pregnant until 3 months later sometimes that is your body telling it still hasn't recovered from the d&c.
Well with this pregnancy at 7wks i started bleeding i thought that my worst fears were coming true. But i was prescribed progesterone suppositories and saw the heartbeat. At 10wks i was finally able to hear that lovely beating sound 175bpm, i cried with happiness.
At 13wks i bled again not alot and i do get alot of cramps but i went for a scan and saw my little one moving around like crazy, the doctor said i could be just one of those unlucky ones who will blled through pregnancy,or it could be that from the stretching the membranes bleed.
I can't really say that i am enjoying my pregnancy,i have decided to buy a doppler for the days i wake up with that unsure feeling. But if after these 9 months this wonderful human being is placed in my arms lovely and healthy i know it will have been worth it.
I am 14wks and am due for the end of May 1 day before my birthday......I can't imagine a better birthday present!!!

Good luck to all the writers of this site, i love coming here.

I also bled with my first pregnancy.  It was really scarry.  I layed in a pool of blood in my bed one night when I was just 7 weeks along.  Thank God, there was a heartbeat during the Ultrasound.  I was on bed rest for the following 8 weeks, as the placenta had started to detach.  Everything healed great, and i had a very healthy daughter.

I wish you the best of everything with your pregnancy.
