Pregnancy and birth defects

My husband and i were having trouble getting pregnant. I had heard of an old wives tale that said sometimes a turkey baster worked.I used it. Turns out i am pregnant.Im scared that my baby could have birth defects because of the way it happened,is that possible? Could the sperm have contacted some type of germ? please help.

thankyou, this is my first time and i talked to my doctor today, i actually felt a little silly telling her, but for some reason im still horrified my baby could have defects. I guess because it is not the "normal"way to get pregnant

Actually, it's probably a more normal route than you think. :)

If I've learned anything from my pregnancy experience it's that Old Wive's Tales are just that.
I'm totally sure everything is fine.  Be happy!!

You are soooo lucky to be pregnant! It's so funny because we have thought of doing that too. Sometimes my husband works away, and I wondered if I could store some sperm in just the right temperature while he is away I could use a turkey baster and self concieve (conceive) :) *lol* I really wouldn't worry about your baby having defects. You have no idea how potent the acid and your immune system is in the vagina. Most likely if there were any germs or bacteria they would have been killed. I have seen a video of a sperm getting destroyed by an immune cell in the vaginal tract. If the sperm was healthy enough to swim up there and get to your egg and get you pregnant, and there has been no spotting or any discomfort, you will more than likely be fine....but...I hate to say it...there is no 100% certainty in this world. But I personally wouldn't believe an old wives tale. If you are concerned, get regular checkups and if you feel anything odd or unusual go and see your doctor. :) Good luck!
