Do you get pregnant on your fertile days or just on the day you ovulate? If you have sex on the fertile days and ovulating day, how likely are you to become pregnant?

You can get pregnant ANYTIME during your cycle.  You are more likely to get pregnant after you ovulate which is mid-cycle.  If you look back to the question you posted on 8/19/05, this was basically answered, you just worded you question differently.  Good luck.

If your periods have been fairly regular and you have been having regular unprotected intercourse, then you have about 80-90 percent chance of conceiving within 1 year.  Of those people, I believe something like 70% of them usually conceive within 3 months.

Using the "calendar method" to determine ovulation is not very reliable.  Most women DO NOT ovulate on day 14.  If you know precisely when you ovulate this will help you time your sex better. Ovulation prediction kits, charting your bbt, or watching for body cues (cervical mucus) will help you to determine when you ovulate.

Ovulation is when your egg is released from your ovary.  This takes place about midway through your cycle.  If there is viable sperm there to meet your egg, you could conceive.  Your egg is viable for about 12 hours, so the window after you ovulate is very small.  Your most fertile time is about 2 days before you ovulate to the day after you ovulate.  My doctor said that the biggest mistake people make is trying too late or after you ovulate since the sperm needs about 12 hours to become viable, add that to when your egg is released...

According to my fertility specialist, eggs are viable for up to 48 hrs and sperm are viable for up to 72. Just thought I would put my 2 cents in. Hope this helps.

I thought the egg was viable for 24 hours. Is it only 12?

I've heard anywhere from 12 hr to 48 hours, so I think they generally say 24 hours as an average.

This confuses me "since the sperm needs about 12 hours to become viable".  Surely this is a typo.  They are swimming right off the bat and on their way.  Do you mean it takes 12 hours to get from the vagina up to the egg?
