Prenatal Vitamin Causing Symptoms?

by SRELM, Mar 26, 2005 12:00AM
Hello.  I'm 34, pregnant with my 4th child, just about 5 weeks along.  I've had some breast tenderness, not a lot of nausea.  Last night I took my first prenatal vitamin and this morning I feel gassy and have had very loose bowel movements.  My stomach feels crampy and I am wondering if it could be a miscarriage symptom or just reaction to the prenatal vitamin?

it's probably neither. i had both of those things as "normal" pregnancy symptoms. for some reason being pregnant in your 20's is a heck of alot easier than in your 30's. LOL. I'm 31 and pregnant with my 3rd and this one has definitely not been as easy as the 2 I had in my early 20's. Hang in there and keep taking your vitamins.

I think it could possibly be your prenatal vitamin.  My doctor told me that iron can cause different reaction is patient's body.  Some people cannot absorb iron nicely, especially on an empty stomach.  In my case, I took natalplus and started having bad diarrhea for the duration I was on it.  I got off that and switched to regular multivitamin as directed by my doctor.  I am fine now.  Usually prenatal has the same stuff as regular vitamin but in smaller dosage.   Iron is better absorb on an empty stomach, but if you can't take it, consider taking it after a meal.  Worse comes to worse, ask your doctor to prescribe another vitamin better for you.

Usually constipation is normal in pregnancy because your body is trying to slow down the process in order to absorb some nutrient for your baby.  Persisted diarrhea, on the other hand, is NOT normal unless you have prior IBS associated symptoms.

Hope that helps.

EVERY THING changes when your pregnant, but first off what did you eat the previous day? Anything gassy, chilli? cabbage, asapragus?
Next the vitamin- If you have only taken one I really wouldnt think it was that  usually a reaction would happen after a few taken.
But I went both ways while pregnant  constipated then maybe loose,  I would just keep an eye on it and if it continued for a few days then call the doctor  drink lots of water so you dont get dehydrated.

Hey Stacie  my pregnancies got better and easier with age!!

cin- you are lucky then. i don't remember having any "symptoms" with my first 2 and with this one I've had what seems like every single one in the book. LOL :o)

Actually I always have great pregnancies  I think with all three I was only sick once!  Worked right up until the week before but I always have c-sections.
This last c-section seemed the easiest I was up walking around right away and hardly had any pain they kept asking me if i want something for pain I said No
I think you are having a c-section right?

Thanks for all the advice.  This is my 4th pregnancy and will be my 4th c-section.  My last pregnancy was in 2000 so my body should be healed.  I have developed benign pvc's/ectopic heartbeats since my last pregnancy and am a bit worried they may get worse with pregnancy.  I took my vitamin on an empty stomach and am feeling okay now (just very tired :)

yeah-this will be my 3rd c-section. I remember my 2nd one being easier than my first, but with 10 years in between #2 and #3 (yeah- I know- I'm CRAZY) I'm not holding out much hope for an easier one this time. :o)

It could be the vitamins.  Both of my close girlfriends, both of whom are pregnant, got sick from their prenatal vitamins.  After they started taking them at night, both did better.
