I would think start them right away. If by chance they make you feel sick,take them in the eveningEvening primrose Evening primrose oil. And don't buy the expensive Materna,ask them for the generic brand..it's the exact same thing. Congratulations!
Now. If you were planning this pregnancy they say you should start them while you are still trying to get pregnant. But you should start as soon as you find out.
My Dr. told me to start taking them at least 3 months before trying to conceive. But there are many women that end up with a great big suprise. So in your case, start taking them now. But as far as the spina bifida thing goes, the spine develops the first month of pregnancy, before you even know you are pregnant. But folic acid is still needed in pregnancy.
