Progesterone suppositories - problem

by HJBQ, Aug 07, 2003 12:00AM
I am 34 years old. I lost my first pregnancy to miscarriage at 8 weeks back in November. I lost my second pregnancy (blighted ovum)at 11 weeks to D&C in March. The doctor did a series of blood tests, all of which came back normal (except our chromosome test, which is not back yet). The doctor suggested progesterone suppositories.
I used them, and realized that the symptoms I got when on them were just like pregnancy. The second month, 2 days before I was to start them again I started getting the pregnancy symptoms. I thought I must be pregnant, but then once I started the suppositories symptoms got intense. I ended up testing negative when I tested and had a very long period (6 days not 3)and the symptoms did not leave until after it was done.
I decided not to take the suppositories again. This past month, I started getting strong pregnancy symptoms around 1.5 weeks before my period was due. I thought I was pregnant because I was not using the suppositories. I knew I was feeling the symptoms of nausea early, I was also bloating, and my nipples got really sensitve(non of which I suffer from on a regular period)4 days before my period was due I started to bleed. The blood was dark brown at first, then red, but always clotty and stringy. It was relatively short this time. It reminded me of my miscarriage, but I tested negative for pregnancy on the day I started to bleed.
What do you think is happening? Do you think the addition of progesterone has triggered my own progesterone to spike? Or do you think I may have had 2 early miscarriages even though the hcg didn't show yet?

I have only heard of progesterone being prescribed once you are pregnant again, its supposed to protect the fetus in the first 12 weeks.  What was your doctors reason for putting you on it while trying to get pregnant? I asked to be put on progesterone suppositories because of 2 prior m/cs, and its been working as far as I know, Im 9wks and saw the heartbeat, but I am curious why they would prescribe it after a d&c...

I'm told that if you might have a tendency to have low progesterone, it is more effective to start taking supplements (suppository or otherwise) before you get pregnant.  That would be the reason for prescribing it early.  As for the symptoms, I'm not sure what to tell you.  I've only taken used progesterone during pregnancy.

Ya, it does seem confusing...but I tell you, I wish I had not taken the suppositories...I think I may be imbalanced hormonally for a while now.
It just goes to show you that sometimes things don't work like they think they should for everyone.
Such is life.
