Progesterone

by dbestone, May 08, 2007 12:00AM
I have read some posts about progesterone being given to help maintain the pregnancy. I was wondering if your levels should get checked before pregnancy occurs. I m/c a few days ago and was wondering if it could have been from the hormonal imbalance. I go for my 2 week check up soon, and would like to know if getting blood work tested should be an option.

I'm so sorry for your loss; I really feel for you and can tell you that with time, the pain does diminish.  After my second miscarriage, they did every blood test known to man, including progesterone level.  For me, they tested on Day 24 of my cycle even though I'd told them I had a 25 day cycle.  So, I had to wait another month and this time they tested me earlier (apparently they need to see the level at a certain number of days past ovulation.)  Well, mine was a little low, and all the other tests came back normal, so they put me on progesterone suppositories for the first 12 weeks of this pregnancy.  I started taking it the day after ovulation so the baby, if there were one, would have a good environment right from the start.  I am convinced the progesterone is what worked, and now at 20 weeks I'm cautiously optimistic that this baby is a keeper.  They tested my progesterone early in both m/c, and it was borderline (11-12) but they never followed up so it's possible that's what caused my losses.  If you have a shorter cycle (Luteal Phase Defect) it's quite possible that you need progesterone supplementation.  I wish you the best of luck!

I am sorry for your loss.  With my current pregnancy, they did not test my levels prior to conceiving (I had two previous mc's), however once I learned I was pregnant they checked progestrone.  It was low (12) and so they put me on progestrone suppositories for the entire 1st trimester.  Seems to have worked because I am almost 17 weeks now!  Good luck!

I have had a m/c in the distant past. Sorry for what you have gone through. My boyfriend and I are trying to conceive and have had no luck. But I too had my progesterone levels checked, don't know the number, but it is low.So my dr is sending me to an ob. I hope that they can put me on something and it will help to conceive. my cycle is 15 dadys late, and all home tests say neg. Not sure what to think at this point. Good luck to you!
