Protein in Urine

by Adelle, Aug 13, 2003 12:00AM
My 14 Year old daughter has protein in her urine, it was discovered during her annual exam.  She started menstruating during the past year, suffers from excema since 2 years and is treated with steroid creams for her excema, it is all over her body.  She complains about fatigue, but I did not take it seriously thinking it's a teenage prank/stuff.  Her urine was tested twice, with her morning urine and later that day at 4pm.  Her doctor said it was 3+ both times.  She is not sick with a cold or anything.  I have Lupus SLE and take predisone when I flare.  Her doctor seems to think she may have it also and has kidney involvement.  He has scheduled more blood and urinalysis for her.
Could she have the lupus factor and would it cause the protein in the urine because of kidney involvement? This has never happened before.  Is irreversible damage occuring to her kidneys with her current status? Can she stay like this, or should I take a wait and see approach? Should I take her to a rheumatologist, or a kidney specialist?  Her doctor is a genral internist.

Please help..she's my only child.

I'm really to sorry that you are having such a rough time. I don't know much about this, but I do know that Lupus is hereditary so there is a chance she may have it also. I just want to say that this is your child and you should do anything for her that you can.  Taking her to see a specialist is a good idea.  He/She will be able to provide you with a lot of more helpful information.  I pray that everything turns out ok.  I know that this may have not been much help, but I have a friend that has Lupus and I know it takes a toll on you.  Take care of yourself and your daughter!  Good luck and let me know on how things turn out!

I don't know anything about Lupus factors, but I have a lot of UTI's and kidney infections, and I always have protein in my urine.  I have a defective urinary tract which holds bacteria.  I found that out at a specialist, and I would venture to say that it may be something along those lines that your daughter is experiencing.  Does she have any symptoms of kidney infection or UTI?
