Pulminary embolism during c-section

by havequestions, Apr 01, 2004 12:00AM
Had 2 PE's during C-section.  Have liden factor 5 and tested positive for having the anticardiolipids.  Was put on iv heparin while in the hospital and also started on coumadin.  my body overreacte to the thinners and i had internal bleeding at c-section site. Am home now, and dr. said clots should dissolve themselves.  Two questions:  1)should I be on coumadin for the rest of my life and 2)at some point, should i have another scan to make sure clots are gone?  Has anyone had this situation?

My husband had a pulminary embolism during some surgery.  It's very scary, glad you made it through.  You brought up the same questions we had.  My husband was not diagnosed with any "clotting disorder".  This was mearly a fluke as he's had surgery before with no complications like this.  He was on cumodine for about a year afterward and monitored very frequently for his levels.  We went to the Dr and asked your very questions, it's scary to think the clot just stays there and disolves.  The Dr. said there are so many studies saying this and that.  He said after 6 months to a year unless your prone to clots, it's up to the comfort of the patient.  We decided he would stop the coumidine (sp?).  This was about a year ago and he's been fine.  The meds have their own problems and risks as you've already discovered.   Work closely with your Dr., get lots of blood tests to watch you levels and keep a conistent diet.  The clots really do disolve themselves with treatment.  Good luck.
