Question about period after breastfeeding.....

by Emma1, Feb 21, 2005 12:00AM
Anyone with any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. I stopped breastfeeding over a month ago and have been on the pill for 2 months. Will be starting a new pill pack this Sunday. I still have not had a period. I've never had a problem with or have been irregular with it, so it seems a little weird to me. Anyone have any advice?

I haven't been on the pill since before my first baby, so no advice on that end, but as for the breastfeeding, I started my first period exactly one month after stopping.  But you started the pill while you were still breastfeeding... I don't know if that affects your cycle ?

From what I am understanding breast feeding suppresses ovarian
production therefore no period, but is it safe to take birth control pill while breastfeeding? Does it not cross over into the milk? Maybe it depends on the type of pill Did you discuss the pill with the doctor or did you just go back on them by yourself??

I really can't answer your "question" but I did want to respond that Breastfeeding DOES NOT supress ovulation!!!!!!!

DOES NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You CAN get pregnant while breastfeeding!!!!!!!! I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and am still breastfeeding........also, I think there are different ways that bf affect women....I started getting my period around the 8 week pp mark and was very regular (28 days) until I got pregnant again. My ds will be 9 months on the 27th. Some women don't get a period the entire time they are breastfeeding.

Yes, you can take the pill while you are bf but most pills have a tendancy to dry up your supply.....my doc gave me the "mini-pill" in the beginning. (I was told to wait 2 or 3 months before getting pregnant again because I had to have a Rubella shot after delivery)

FYI--Go to pregnancy and parenting
there is a method called LAM-Lactational Amenorrhea Method
where the woman is only breast feeding and no period this is suppose to be 98% effective  suppressing ovulation
NOT that I would TRY this for birth control

There is a mini pill that is SAFE to take while breastfeeding.  It does not affect your breastmilk.  Breastfeeding is suppose to supress ovulation---but that depends on how often you are breastfeeding (like thru the night) and a lot of other things.  Therefore, it is not impossible to get pregnant while nursing.  Also, after birth---breastfeeding or not---you don't HAVE to have a period in order to Ovulate.  Meaning, you can actually ovulate before your actually get your period.  So, if you are waiting for your period to return in order to start trying--you might actually get lucky and get pg before you see your period.  You could be waiting awhile!  I know that this has happened to many people.
