Question for all women, with or without daughters

Hi, My 8 year old is really starting to develope early. You can really tell and I think she might need to start to wear a bra. She is bigger than my 10 year old! At what point do they need to start wearing a bra? I don't really remember when I started. I talked with her about it and she begged me not to buy one for her. My oldest begged me for one this summer so I got her a little pre-training bra even though she doens't need it. Is there a point where I need to force her to wear it? I mean she just turned 8 a few months ago. I thought with her she wouldn't need one for a few more years, but she is really growing fast! She is more of a tom boy and doesn't like anything girly, and to her a bra is deffinatly girly, unlike my oldest, she is ALL girl. What are your thoughts about this? I don't want to get too grafic, but they are really popping out. (boy is my oldest jealous! :))
All of this is coming up so fast, they are growing up so fast. I swear last week they were still toddlers! LOL

Happy 4th!!!

I had the same prob with my daughter years ago.  We started with some fun colored and thick sports bras.  Seemed to do the trick until we got her to the age where she wanted to wear a real bra b/c it was SO noticable.  There are some double layer ones out there without underwire and they really help.

Hope that is helpful,
G

Well my daughter is not even born yet, but I know I didn't really want a bra when I first got one, I was the youngest  and only girl. I didn't want to grow up I didn't want my brothers and dad to know that I was wearing bras, but my mom bought me a couple sports bras and I didn't feel so weird wearing those, I think I was 9 (4th grade). Good luck, kids sure do grow up sooo fast! We were going out on our friends boat last week and there were all these girls couldn't be more then 10 or 12 years old, prancing around in tiny bikini's and acting about 18! YIKES! I'm not ready to deal with that.

Hi! It's funny you posted this because me and my 8yr old DD just had this conversation yesterday.  I asked her if any of the girls in her class were wearing bras yet and she said she didn't think so.  She doesn't really need one yet but she wants me to get her the bralet type ones.  We will see what happens over the summer and then go from there. Physically she's 8 emotionally she's like a hormonal teenager--one minute happy the next crying.  Thank goodness the two younger ones are boys!!

i was the same way when i was young.  unfortunately, i found out when my father said to my mother right in front of me "isnt it time you get that girl a bra"  i was humiliated!!  so im glad you are trying to be proactive before someone else says something.  anyway, you could try the tank tops with the built in support.  she can wear them under cothes or by itself.  maybe that would be less embarrassing for her and she could even fit them in with her tom boy clothes.

I agree with the first post a sports bra is prob the way to go! Good luck...

Thanks ladies! :) I will take her shopping and let her pick out a sports bra. I think that would be a really good compromise for her as long as it doesn't have any hearts or flowers on it! ;)
Thanks for the sugestions!!
Hope you all have a great 4th!!

If she's more of a tom boy then a sports bra is the way to go, but if they're "popping" out then you need to make her wear one, no if's and's or but's about it.  I was 8 when I started developing, by the time I was 12 I was already in a C cup.  So I know how it is.  Good luck with it.

If she doesn't like the sports bra you could always maybe just try an undershirt (tank) with a built in liner. Best Wishes!

The only thing I think would worry me with buying my 8 year old a bra would be taunts and bullying from school, especially when they do physical education as the girls at 8 are still expected to undress with the boys (this is uk, could be different elsewhere) you can also get a lot of jealous girls!!

If you feel she really needs a bra, buy her one that can be disguised by wearing a crop top (half vest) on top to hide it. Its probably not ideal in hot weather but your daughter might be happier being a bit too warm, than being bullied.

Just an idea!

Boys and girls change in the same room in the UK?  That never happens in Canada, not even in primary.

Boys and girls change in the same room there?!  That seems way too old. It seems strange that they change together at any age. Just my opinion though.
Here the kids don't even change clothes for PE untill they get into highschool, so that won't be an issue.
Thanks :)
