RH- Question after birth of RH+ baby

RH- Question after birth of RH+ baby

Hello
I have recently found something else to worry about. Recently i started donating blood and found that i am A-. I researched the rh factor and grew curious so i  bought a test at home kit and found that my daughter, (10) is A+. My dr never discused this with me. I did get a shot on the bottom after she was born, i thought they said it was vitamin D. Is there any chance that my dr overlooke this rh factor or is it most likley that the shot i recieved was actually anti-d?

If anyone has any insite i would really appreciate it... Thanks!

That would be a tough one to find out about what shot they gave.  What you can do is next time you go to the doctor they can see if you have been sensitized to RH+...meaning you have circulating antibodies against it.  If you do, you werent given the shot and would have to let your Dr know if you were to become pregnant again.

Rhogam is sometimes called an "Anti-D" injection, athough that would be a confusing term for them to have used.   Do you remember getting a shot at around 28 weeks gestation, too?  The injection is usually given then, and again after birth if the baby is Rh +.

Women are never given a vitamin D injection after birth.  I suspect the shot you were given was indeed Rhogam.

It is easy enough to ask your doctor if you were given the injection, or you can write and request your medical records from your hospitalization.

You can't call, because they usually need written permission (at least for hospital records, that's true)

You might be able to call your old doctors office, but the doctors office wont have any record of what you were given in the hospital.

Your best bet would be to write to the medical record dept of the hospital in TN, and ask for the records pertaining to any medications you were given.

Thanks for your help. I just found out that if i had not gotten the shot and i had sensitized with the RH antigen then the blood bank I donate at would be rejecting my  blood. So my fears have been put to rest.

Well...I'm not 100% sure about that, but I know little about blood banking.  Who told you that?  The blood bank?

It could very well be true, though.  I simply don't know.

If someone gave you a shot after birth, and it wasn't for nausea or pain or rubella (german measles), it probably was the Rhogam.

Yes I emailed the blood bank. They told me they accept whole blood but not platletes or red blood cells. I am able to donate all 3.

Usually, the hospital gives you an ID card after they give you Rho-GAM, to identify the lot number of the injection in case you have a reaction after you are discharged.  It's also used to let medical staff know that you received your injection at 28 weeks, in the event that you have trauma or bleeding after that time but before you deliver.
