Rapid weight gain while preggers

by kris123, Dec 01, 2006 12:00AM
Ok, I know there have been many posts on the issue of weight gain, but I can't stop gaining.  I have put on not just 8, but 10pounds since week 5 and I am 10w2d.  So lets see, that is 2pounds a week.  How can I stop from gaining so much.  I feel like such a fat cow.  I didn't do much exercise this week, but try to jog about 15min and walk another 15 - total 30min - ever other day.  the 10pounds i picked up can't be just because of the baby.  I haven't really noticed anywhere but my belly.  My belly is big and soft. Don't mean to be gross, but I got almost like a fat roll.  I was 137 when I started.  Am I putting to much into this weight gain?

I am almost 17 weeks and have gained 15 lbs.  My last doctors visit the midwife yelled at me and said I have gained too much weight but I am not overeating.  In the beginning if I didn't have a full stomach I felt sick and I could only eat carbs.  Everyone is different. I have been wearing maternity clothes since I was 10 weeks. Good luck to you.

When I went to the dr. at 8w, I picked up 7pounds.  He said good ????  He said that means I am healthy.  So since then 3pounds, but it may be more like two, so let's say 9 pound gain so far.  I go to the dr again on Dec. 21, so 20days.  I will just eat the right things and whatever I gain i gain.  I eat good all day long, but when I get home, man I just eat, eat, eat.

I am 17 weeks and already gained over 20 pounds.  Mainly because I load up on carbs to help my upset belly.  Oh well, I will loose it.

At my appointment this week I had gained only one or two pounds (at 9 weeks -- and with my first so that's probably why I haven't gained much) and when I talked to the nurse she said that I should definitely exercise becuase they only want me to gain between 20 and 25 pounds total!  Honestly, I think they shouldn't put a number out there like that because now I'm going to be on the scale all the time and I'll stress if I gain too much.  Everyone is different.  Kris, you said it yourself in another thread -- it's probably water weight.  You said you fluctuate and that's probably the reason for that.  Like another poster said, watch your salt intake and you should be fine.

To make you feel better at my 12 week appointment I had gained close to 20 pounds!  I had no morning sickness during my 1st trimester and I was able to eat whatever but I did have to keep something in my stomach at all times.  I am now almost 18 weeks and my weight gain has slowed downed a lot.  At my last appointment I had only gained 3 pounds which was a big relief to me because I was starting to get a little worried about my weight.  I did not start wearing maternity clothes until around my 14th week though eventhough I gained so much weight early on.  My pre-pregnany weight was around 100 pounds so my dr. just said that my body needed to catch up to where it should have been at that time in my pregnancy.  He has never seemed to concerned about my weight and as a matter of fact he seemed kinda of happy that I had gained the weight.

I gained 13 pounds by 10 weeks pregnant, now at 22 weeks, I have gained 32 pounds (from 125 to 157) and I still have about four months to go.  I feel like the fattest pregnant woman ever pulling in those kind of numbers, but I've decided to just live it up for now and worry about dieting when the baby's here and my body has begun to heal.

Here's what happened to me. First trimester, I gained I think like 8 lbs because I was sick, and the only foods that made me feel better were carbs (ie: bagels, pasta).  Not sure why but, it didnt make me as sick.  Plus, when you have morning sickness, for me, when my stomach was empty, i felt sick.  So I was always eating something or another.

Now in my second trimester, my eating has slowed down alot. There is a point where I get full whereas the first trimester, I didnt really get full...lol I've only gained 3 lbs in 5 weeks now.  So everything is slowed. I bet once you get into your second trimester, your eating and hormones will calm down and maybe you wont eat as much.

im 7 weeks and i already have to wear maternity trousers..its terrible...im gaining weight fast.!!!!

by joyfulmom, Dec 01, 2006 12:00AM
Same with me. I'm in my 1st trimester and feel sick when my stomach is empty. So I feel like I am eating a bit more. I try and have snacks here and there. Not sure how much I've gained since I haven't seen the doctor yet (and don't have a scale at home). But I can still fit in my normal clothes fine so far. I'm almost 7 wks.

I was 133 before I was pregnant, now, at my doctor appt. on Monday, I weighed in at 143!!! So, I have gained 10 pounds and I am 17 1/2 weeks.  Just try and relax, I don't think that you have anything to worry about unless your doctor says something to you.  Try not to concentrate so much on how much you are gaining, just make sure you are eating nutritiously and providing good healthy calories to your baby :)

by newbie2b, Dec 01, 2006 12:00AM
PS: I wouldn't worry unless your Dr. mentions it.  The first trimester was like survival of the fittest for me...lol Anything that made me feel better went into my body. as long as your not going crazy with food, your body is going what it needs to do to make your baby.

I have gained 22lbs up until now and I am between 24-25 weeks.

I gained about 13 lbs in my first trimester, due to sickness and the need for carbs.

My doctor had to put me on a diet (basically no pasta, bread or cakes).  But this last week I have exaggereated a lot and gained 4 lbs.

Just keep an eye on your blood pressure, cut down on salt and try to eat as healthily as possible. Some people put on a lot in their first trimester and then it slows down, others like myself may carry on growing. I am trying to walk now and eat as healthily as possible, only problem is when I go to eat at my MIL she tends to stuff me with all this great food.

I'm 29 weeks and have gained 24 pounds.  That is within the recommended range however it's the high end.  Don't think you can eat for two b/c it will catch up with you.  Two months ago I ate whatever I wanted for about a month b/c I was hungry ALL the time! Hence between weeks 20-24 I gained 7 pounds!  My doctor told me to watch my carbs.  I watched what I ate these past 5 weeks and I gained only 4 lbs.  And this is the period when I should be gaining an average of a pound per week.  It's recommended not to gain more than 5 pounds in your 1st trimester.  I'm not trying to bash you beleive me!  I know it's hard.  I'm just saying unless you want to be 50+ pounds heavier by the time your pregnancy is done you need to nip it in the bud now b/f it gets out of hand.

I can remember when I was preggers last time and I also eat whatever and gained 7pounds in a month and watch what I eat after that and remember gaining 2-3pound till birth.  I somehow managed to only gain 25pounds.  That was when I was 17.  I remember being 140 before and being 140 when I came home from the hospital.  It seems so hard now.  I agree with you 50 just is to much for me.

by ajemmom, Dec 01, 2006 12:00AM
I think your body is going to do whatever it needs to grow a healthy baby!  If you are craving something, eat it!  Just don't over do it.  There is a reason your body craves things.  I know the recommended weight gains for a normal, but I don't know too many people who have only gained that certain amount.  I gained 50lbs. with both of my pregnancies.  My first pregnancy, I gained the 50 without really watching what I was eating...I just ate what I wanted when I wanted it.  I was eating for 2 right?  With my second, I didn't want to gain 50 again, so I really ate right and exercised and I still gained 48 lbs.!!!  So, I learned that your body is going to do whatever it needs to do!  Don't worry about it so much and enjoy your pregnancy because it will be over soon enough!

I'm right there with ya girl! I'm 9wks and have gained 11 lbs. I about fell over when I saw the scale say 150lbs. I've been on the Atkins diet for the past 5 months, lost 50lbs, then got pregnant. So from going to 20 carbs a day to probably 100+, I just hope the weight gain slows down. I hated packing those size 5 jeans away that I had finally gotten into! A baby is always worth it though!

by fancy1231, Dec 01, 2006 12:00AM
I just get fat when im preggers, dont know why..other than i love to eat, and i cant exercise right now, RE said no way since i am high risk.I had 2 mc this last year and was only able to take off the weight for one, so i started out 17 lbs overweight with this one. Im almost 12 weeks this tuesday, and have already put on about 15lbs, i feel like a cow... but if my body needs it for some reason its ok by me, I can always worry about lossing it after the baby.. and back to running and lifting weights later. :)

I'm 22 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my second child. My before pregnancy weight was 132 pounds. At my doctor's visit a week ago my weight was 160 pounds. I've gained 28 pounds so far and i still have at least 3 months to go.  My doctor has told me to try to eat healthy foods and stay active so that I don't gain too much weight or my baby will be big and difficult to deliver. I've taken his advice, but I'm still steadily gaining weight. Do you guys think excercise is a good idea?
