Recurrent Miscarriages

Recurrent Miscarriages

I am a 39 year old that has been trying to concieve (conceive) for a year and a half. We have had five miscarriages in this time. The first was 81/2 weeks. The others have been very early on in the cycle stage. I have seen my doctor and he has done a saline ultrasound only to tell me that I am normal. He put me on two cycles of Clomid at 50mg and when I miscarried it is like he has told me that he could refer me to a specialist or I could just stay with him and come back when I am pregnant. I am also type-o negative and I have no clue what my husband is. Is there someone that can help us to see why I keep having recurrent miscarriages? I am in NC and I am about 30 minutes from East Carolina University. Even if it was a residency program. Our hands are tied on what to do and where to go from here. We have Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Minnesota but they do not cover infertility issues. I was told by my doctor that I was not having infertility issues because obviously I am concieving. They are just not attaching for some reason and I am at my wits end on trying to get some answers. I thought if a doctor is going to put you on Clomid that they would move up to 250mg also. Please can you offer any suggestions?

I would ask for a clotting study, there is a clotting disorder that causes reocurring miscarriages, it is quit common

That is so annoying they told you that you don't need help because you can conceive. What is the good in that if you can't have a baby? I've had 3 miscarriages and am pregnant right now for the 4th time and praying things finally go well. No babies yet. You need to have a full miscarriage workup by a reproductive endocrinologist. This includes all sorts of tests, not just the hsg saline. There are so many things that could be causing these. Most of the time there is a treatment for what is wrong, so it is necessary to test. I have found out I have mtfhr, a genetic thing as well as polycystic ovarian disease, which both cause miscarriages. I'm now on medications to hopefully help me keep a baby. Who knows what's going on with you, but I would be dying for some answers after 5! Have you had your fsh tested or anything?

I understand completely what you are going through.  I am 39 years old as well and I have had 3 misscarriages this year with the last one being 2 weeks ago.  I do havbe 2 children which I am very thankful for.  I saw a geneoligist this past week and a lot of things were ruled out since I do have 2 living children.  As far as the clotting problem, I was told that usually happens in the 2nd trimester rather than right away.  I also inquired about progesterone and from what I was told that is more for the infertility issue and the recurrent miscarriages are not necessarily an infertility isssue.  We plan to try again but it is very scary and I am not sure how you go without worrying that is is not going to happen again....good luck to you!!!

Geneoligist?  Do you mean gynocologist?

I saw a genetic counselor, but he had a specific medical name and guess I am not sure exactly what that is :):) He discussed the possible causes of miscarriages and some of the different tests available.  Sorry for the confusion.

Thank you for all of your responses. I am at a loss of words and I have not tried progesterone. I was told by a friend to get some cream at GNC and rub it in the fleshy parts of my body. I also heard taking baby aspirin was helpful with the clotting issue. My concern is I know I could do all these things and still if it is an issue I do not know about than it might not do any good but after all the miscarriages that I have had I will try anything. I am trying to contact hospitals for referrals to see the best person for my condition without breaking the bank so to speak. I do have to be careful because I have blue cross blue shield of Minnesota but they do not cover infertility issues. It is funny how they will say that it is not infertility but yet when you have to see these specialist it becomes infertility. We live pay check to pay check like the average couple so we would have to watch it when it comes to seeing some of these specialist. Even though I want to know more than ever, I do not want to burden my dear hubbie with extra bills on top of everything else. I am going to ask around because I am in one of the best areas for medical care as I am in NC and we have East Carolina University and Duke University and I know that somewhere in between the two there has to be someone qualified enough to see what is going on. I just want to make sure the the insurance will cover a majority of the cost. How much is it to see an endocrinologist? My doctor did the saline and some series of blood tests and he said all are normal. I still do not understand why he put me on two cycles of Clomid at only 50mg when I have heard different women say that they went from 50mg-250mg and then you have to wait for a while before you can take it again. I have so many unanswered questions and I know they need to be directed at a medical professional. I am going to email everyone I know in the medical profession until I get someone to help me. Thank you for all of your posts and if you have any suggestions or advice I truly welcome them. The scary thing is going in to see the doctor and he looks as bewildered as you.

Hi:

I am so sorry to hear what you're going through, but I have been in the same boat.  I'm 39, and have had 10 m/cs in the past 2 years or so.  I have one DD.

I just wanted to reiterate what ntaylor wrote.  You should see an RE (usually covered by insurance, especially if it's not a fertility issue) and get all the tests done.  I've been through the ringer at Stanford.  Everything came back normal, which is a bit frustrating.

I'm currently 7w3d and have another ultrasound tomorrow (scared to death btw).  Hopefully this one will stick.  We saw the heartbeat last week and everything measured like it should for once.

Good luck to you, and please keep us posted.

Thank you so much for your encouragement! I have contacted some doctors that are about 30 minutes away from me and let them know my situation and hopefully I will hear something back soon. I desperately want to find out why. I can not imagine having 10! Wow, I know that has been tough on you. I pray that this baby in your womb will be supernaturally protected by the the Lord and may he place a hedge of protection around you as you go through this pregnancy and may he comfort you in this time and ease your fear. I really feel good about these doctors. I went online to all of their profiles and they have been in Greenville, NC for 40 years. They have an onsite infertility clinic and they are obstetricians, gynecologists and even marriage therapists. I am praying for a miracle. God bless you in your pregnancy and I hope to get to the bottom of this soon! I will keep everyone posted.
