Reflux

My 11 week old daughter was diagnosed with reflux at 7 weeks.  She was fussy off and on, and chose to discuss this with her dr at her normal scheduled appointment.  She went from being fussy to sounding conjested, to screaming within 2 days.  Her symptoms are: sounding conjested, arching back and screaming while eating, screaming when not eating, sleeping and wakes up screaming, spitting up with every burp and spitting up in between feedings.  Her pediatrician tried Axid , which helped for a couple days with her feedings, but then stopped.  She is now taking Prevacid 2x daily.   ( 1\4 tablet twice)  She's been taking it for four days, so far she's not any better.  Her dr said if the Prevacid does not help, we'll start with different formulas, right now she is on Similac Sensitve.
My question is: She only has a b.m. every 2-3 days, is this normal, could be having a formula intolerance?   Also, a couple days ago, she had blackish\purple contained in her spit up.  I took her burping cloth to her dr., he stated it was not blood, but was debris.(like if dust got into your nose)  This does not make sense to me, how is debris getting into her spit up from her stomach?  Has anyone heard of this?

My daughter also has gas. reflux. She too takes Prevacid for it. She is now 5 months old and has been on the Prevacid since she was a month old. I breast feed her but her pediatrician said that Soy formula was best for babies with  reflux. My daughter also spit up once around 2 months old and it too had spects of balckish/purple in it. I don't think this is debris. She hasn't done it since but I was very shocked to hear that this happend to another baby. It must have something to do with the reflux.

Prevacid takes at least a week to work so hang in there.  Can't help you with the debris type of spit up but constipation is normal when the baby's formula fed.  DD was on Soy for about 6 months before I started reading terrible things about it.

Thanks for letting me know about the spit up with your daughter also.  You can imagine my shock and concern when it happened.  It has only happened that one time.  I wasn't happy with her dr"s explanation, but was comforted knowing it wasn't blood!  I agree it must be something with the reflux.  I also was breastfeeding her, but stopped due to me being sick.  She seemed to have been more satisified with the formula.  But, I think formula made the reflux worse, or it just took time to develop.  How is your daughter doing with the combo of Soy formula and Prevacid?  Did you start both at the same time?

Good luck, the others are right, takes a little time.  Cam was diagnosed at 4 weeks when we went through formulas at 2 weeks and the Nutramigen helped some, but we still ahd issues.  He was put on Prevacid (1 whole 15 mg tablet).  It was still acting up, they were running tests at 10 weeks when he got RSV and saw him refluxing on the screen.  They added Reglan twice daily to help with the spasms and upped his Prevacid for awhile to 1 tablet twice daily too.  They have backed off and the projectile vomiting is back and he's waking up screaming again.  We go back to the Dr. to evaluate again.  We have been good on soy, had switched about 2 months back and he did well.  He also has really reactive airways and the Dr. said some of his problems do come from acid reflux.  When it's under control he's totally happy and easy going.  I hope they can tweak everything for you, is she tiny, it's a pretty small dose, but I guess Cam is a big boy.  Hang in there.

The tablets we have are 30 mg each.  She was 10lbs 9oz. at her 6 week check up, they haven't weighed her again.  I started her on soy on Friday.  Oh my GOSH!!! What a difference in her.  I'm still also giving her the Prevacid.  I am calling the dr. Monday to give an update on how she's doing, I should have waited to start the soy, but I had to do something to try and help her.  She was screaming, legs straght out , and blue, all day Friday.  I started the soy Friday evening, and she was a happy smiling cooing baby on Saturday.  It's Sunday, and she has had 2 b.m.'s since Friday.  I hope she continues this well.

My 3 month old son also has acid reflux. We switched him to Similac Alimentum and he is on 15mg of prevacid and he is a totally different baby. His formula is a hypoallergenic formula and is very easy to digest, so that should help with the constipation if you switch him to that formula.

I am not sure if this will help, but my son did a lot of the same things yoour baby is doing. We went from powdered formula to premade formula, and he was a completely different baby. No longer screamed and spit up, because no air was being mixed into the formula when mixing it. It might be worth a try.

Thank you to everyone with the help!!!     We did make the effort with powder to concentrate to ready made.  Nothing was helping her.  She's still doing great with the soy.  Her dr. said to continue the Prevacid for a couple more days, and then stop to see if she does well with out it. She's been so pleasant with the soy.
Thank you again to everyone with the great help, hopefully she continues this well!

My daughter who is 2 now had reflux really bad when she was a newborn. Eventually she was put on Zantac and I had her on Enfamil A.R. formula which helped, but I think the biggest help was the DR. BROWN bottles (I swear by them). I don't know what bottles you are using now, but I truly to recommend the Dr. Brown ones. My daughter eventually out grew the reflux around 10 months, good luck!
