My Jake was put on ZantacZantac Zantac 150 Zantac 300 Zantac 300 geldose Zantac 75 Zantac efferdose Zantac geldose at about 3 mos. old. According to his doc, it was 'classic' reflux symtoms. About 15-30 minutes after feeding he would cry and scream, all the while arching his back and flailing his arms. Then he would spit up and would seem relieved. And then it would build up again and the whole scene repeated itself. He still spits up fairly often (my daughter was a big spitter, too) but he doesn't seem as upset over it anymore.
Oh boy. DD started having it bad at about 4 weeks. She also had classic symptoms. She was not put on any meds until she was about 12 weeks or so (meanwhile, we were going through HELL!! all of us). Anyway, Zantac did absolutely nothing (plus, it tastes horrible). Prevacid was the answer to our prayers. If you have more questions, PM me. I'll be more than happy to share my experience as I went through a lot with DD.
Addison had the start of it early on, but we didnt medicate till a few weeks ago. she is 12 weeks now, and we started her meds i guess a week ago and it has made the biggest difference. she is breastfed only. she would spit up, but she would also fuss, make that face that something that tastes bad in her mouth. she would fight eating. she would choke on her spit up. dr put her on prevacid, 7.5 mg and it has been night and day. im normally not one to want to medicate, but she was in pain and needed it.
My son was diagnosed w/ sever acid reflux and put on Zantac at 8 weeks. Its really nasty and has a horrible taste, it always made him gag, but I think it did help him. Poor thing he was a miserable baby. We also had to change formula quite a few times and Jack was also a spitter. Its really hard when your going through it, but just rember this to shall pass. I hate to see little ones in pain, I'll be prayin for you guys!
Hi. First let me just say that I'm so sorry you and your baby are going through this. Its really tough. My dd was diagnosed @ 8 weeks. We switched to Soy but she still had it. She was on Zantac and like the other posters said, it didnt seem to work. She hated it. I took her off of it when she got her 2nd month shot because she had a bad reaction to her immunization and I didnt want to pump her full of meds. By the time she hit 3 months old, she was like a different baby. I was getting ready to go back to work and was horribly stressed that no one would be able to take care of her inconsolable crying. But after 3 months, she totally "matured" and it got better. I hope this is the case with your baby. It's not easy and I wish you all the luck in the world.
On a side note, you should put a pillow or something under her mattress in her crib so that the baby is always at an angle. It will help a little. Good luck.
My daughter was diagnosed with reflux, and it was so bad I could not breast feed her. my breast milk was so thin she could not keep it down. Her Doctor put her on Enfamil AR Lipil, and I swear by that. After I put her on it she was perfect. She never even spit up!! The already made stuff is better than the powder though.
im concerned your dr decided to take your baby off breastmilk (the best thing for baby we all know) and use formula. why? all breastmilk is thin, but why didnt he try to give meds to help keep the reflux under control? maybe you were wanting to go with formula too, but if my dr told me to stop breastfeeding id find another dr.
My daughter is 3 months old now and was diagnosed with reflux at about 6 weeks. She was put on Prevacid and has been doing great! She still spits up, but not like before and she no longer arches her back and fusses after she eats. Prevacid was our life-saver and unlike Zantac, it tastes very good - kind of fruity! :-) Good luck to you!
My ped at that time also told me to take her off my breastmilk b/c "obviously she's not responding well to it". Pshh...Needless to say I said "sayonara" to him and went with another pediatrician. She did well on my breastmilk and was gaining weight nicely. Formula constipated her and made her even more miserable.
Vanessa, I'd not give in. It's what's best for your baby and no formula will substitute that. Good luck.
was that dr older? seems some of the older ones like my sis' believe in some "old school" type of treatments. im not saying mothers shouldnt use formula if they really dont want to breastfeed, but dont be discouraged by this kind of bad treatment. the odds of a baby not responding to breastmilk must be very rare.
All 3 of my kids had it...my oldest had it the worst. I can give you some tips I found useful.
As for the breastmilk vs formula...Breast milk IS thinner and easier to to spit up than formula but doesn't mean a baby isn't responding to it. It IS possible that a child is lactose intolerant or allergic to something in the breastmilk but I think that's rare. Even so, there are ways around the breastmilk being thinner...As I said if you want my input send me a pm I'll tell ya what i found helpful.
