Repeated Miscarraiges

by LUV__ME, Apr 20, 2009 08:26AM
So I've had one successful pregnancy at a very young age. Just last year me and my husband were trying, and we were successful with getting pregnant, however a miscarriage came about 8 weeks into the pregnancy. Well 4 months later we were successful again, however another miscarriage followed about 6 weeks. But we didn't let it get to us really. My doctor encourage us to keep trying that sometimes it's just bad luck. Well then 2 months after the 2nd I was again, however another miscarraige followed this one at 8 weeks again. At this point I feel like there is no hope. Something is wrong with me. Is it stress, my body, my fault, the things I do ? what ? i just don't know. it hurts still. it's been about a month and a half since the 3rd one. I just can't seem to get over this factor. I try to not let stress get to me. But it seems that nothing is helping. My doctor tells me this and that. i'm lost and not over this fact. what should i do, give up ? because that's how i feel.

At this point you need furthur testing to see if there is any identifiable cause for your repeated miscarriages.
You should probably seek out the advice of a specialist.

I'm sorry for your losses.

I agree with Peek....you need to see a specialist and get testing done to find out if there is a definitive cause or even some possible causes.  Often you don't find a specific cause, but can treat possible causes with positive outcomes.  I had 4 mc in a row before my DD was born and we never found exact reasons, but treated the probabl causes and it worked for us.  Good luck....don't give up!

for jennyb473: what did you do to 'treat' the possible cause?
for LUV ME: i too have just had 2 m/c in 6 mos and my OB suggested we see a high-risk Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor to review history and get a consult. Who knows if they'll be able to identify the exact issue and next time I get preg (which is the easy part for us, right?!) I will be freaking out the whole time...ugh!

the results of all of my testing came back as - PCOS, homozygous MTHFR mutation and CF carrier.

The MTHFR is in the blood clotting area so they tested my homocysteine levels which is what that gene controls.  Basically, it can be a cardiovascular issue and can cause issues with blood clots and the way the body uses folic acid.  My homocysteine levels came back normal, but as a precaution I was put on Folgard - which is increased folic acid, vit b6 and b12.  I was also put on baby aspirin for that.  Both were stretches, but it couldn't hurt me to be on either of those things, so we tried it.

I was then put on metformin for the pcos because, even though I ovulate on my own, my insulin levels were almost double the normal range due to the PCOS.  I've known I was prediabetic for several years now, but never knew how high my insulin levels were.  Mine were 33 I believe and normal is under 17.  So what that means is that my body is producing that much more insulin to bring my glucose levels down, and they were only coming down to prediabetic stages.  So the metformin works to help bring the glucose levels down, which in turn lets your body not produce so much insulin.  PCOS patients are very often overweight, prediabetic and have insulin resistance.  The metformin helps with those things and often helps regulate your cycle if you are not already regular.

We tried that combination and when I got a positive test (my 4th) I stopped the metformin per my RE's instruction.  I always thought I had a luteal phase defect as well since my cycles were getting shorter and shorter.  My RE disagreed and thought I only needed progesterone if my levels were too low and he didn't think they were.  I ended up mc again and decided to switch doctors to someone more aggressive.   I lost some weight, took about 6 months off to "regroup".  The new RE kept me on the extra folic acid, baby aspirin and metformin and we added progesterone at 3dpo.  The first month, it worked!  I stayed on all meds thru the first trimester - was scared to death to stop the progesterone and the metformin, but I did at 13 weeks.  I stayed with the folic acid thru about the 2nd trimester and the baby aspirin the whole pregnancy.  I had never made it past 8 weeks....so I was on pins and needles, but ended up with a very normal pregnancy.  I did get gestational diabetes about 30 weeks - which is odd since I was on the metformin in the beginning and that usually lessens the odds, but I still got it.  I started on glucophage and delivered about a week early.

None of the things we treated were definitive causes, just possible causes.  But nothing I was taking was going to hurt me if I really didn't need it.  The metformin, I really did need but the others were precautionary only.  We are going to ttc again this summer and I am already back on everything to get ready - except the progesterone until we are really trying again.

Good luck to you!!

I have one child, a 31/2 yr old girl, no problems at all before or during that pregnancy. In the last yr I have had 3 miscarriages. two at 6 weeks one at 11 1/2.  After the 3rd miscarriage the dr did a bunch of blood work, also tested my chromosomes. he said there are no problems. Also did the xray of my uterus where they insert dye and take pictures. Still says everything is fine that we are just having some bad luck. Do I accept that answer or see yet ANOTHER DR? I can't help but wonder if it is something simple that I need and these Dr's are looking for something more serious. I don't know what to do. I am 34 my hubby is 40 and we are wanting to keep trying but not sure for how much longer. Anyone have any advice or happy stories for me?????
Thanks so much!
Michelle
