Retinopathy of Prematurity Stage 5

Retinopathy of Prematurity Stage 5

I have a cousin in Bangladesh she was born 30-weeks premature on Feb 26, 2007. Her due date was scheduled to be the end of April. She has retinopathy of prematurity with total retinal detachment in both eyes. She was in an incubator for 23 days and was given various medications. Her birthweight was only 1.23 kg (2.7 lbs).

We are bringing her to the U.S to visit Dr. Mike Trese in Michigan on August 28th.

I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of vision can one get back once a surgery is done to reattach the retinals. I read online in various places that low vision can be gained once surgery is done. Did anyone of you have any personal experience with a similar situation?

This is probably a better question in the doctor-to-patient forum.  I think there is only one post a day there and it opens at different times...so you have to keep trying.

Also, see if there is an opthamology doctor forum -- they might have advice there as well.

Good luck to you and your cousin.
