SSRIs and pregnancy

Are there any dangers in taking an SSRI (lexapro) during the first trimester of pregnancy?

Lexapro is pregnancy category C, which means:

Animal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
OR
No animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

Wish I could help more, but I just don't know.

Lexapro and any of your SSRI's have been taken during pregnancy- She is right about the category C. The way the risk is weighed is the length of your depression/ condition  prior to pregnancy. If it was only situational and mild they will sometimes discontinue them. If your risk was moderate to severe- due to the hormonal changes and other factors associated with preganancy- They will alot of the times choose to continue treatment with the mommy- and monitor closely. The Health department and  A OB/GYN will be your best advisor. Sorry I could be more definate

Hi there, I was on Lexapro when I was planning to get pregnant. My OB/GYN has had me switch to Prozac for the duration of the pregnancy and during breastfeeding because there is a lot more data on prozac showing that it does not harm the fetus.  While Lexapro may be just as safe, it has not yet been determined through research (that is my understanding). I continued taking my lexapro during pregnancy and my baby was born with a severe birth defect.
If you are not already pregnant , try coming off your meds.
