SWITCHING TO FORMULA?

MY DD IS 3 MOS., AND I AM CONSIDERING COMPLETELY WEANING HER FROM ME.  SHE DOES BETTER ON FORMULA THAN WITH ME.  SHE STILL SPITS UP, BUT NOT AS SEVERE.  ANY SUGGESTIONS?  HOW MUCH SHOULD SHE BE EATING AND HOW OFTEN?  I FEED ON DEMAND AND WILL CONTINUE, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH SHE IS GETTING RIGHT NOW? (STILL BREASTFEEDING)  ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!

I would bring the whole issue up with the pediatrician. If she already has digestive problems, you might be going from the frying pan into the fire.

i dont know about the formula, my dd never took it, guess she didnt like the taste(or the fact i only tried twice hehe) but you never know how much they get when they nurse, they will keep eating when their hungary, and stop when their full, thats about as far as you can go, its weird my doc would ask me about how much breast milk she eats, i was like what? i have no idea, i thought that was the dumbest questiong a doctor could ask

I already have discussed this issue with my doctor, and he says I can try different formulas until I find one that will not upset her tummy, but that is a costly way of doing it, so I thought I would ask on here for what formula worked for others who have experienced similar circumstances.

I absolutely would not wean an infant for spitting up more.  It will be better, and less frustrating in the long run to stick w/breastfeeding.  Nobody can tell you which formula your infant will do better with.  Good luck, but personally, sticking w/the nursing will be the easiest...and best.

I don't have any kids, yet (due April 18th) but maybe you could get you a little hand pump and put your breast milk in a bottle and see how much she drinks of it before she is full that way you will know how much.  As for trying the different kinds, if you check out the formula websites they can send you samples and coupons.  Or just buy the ready made kind in the smaller cans, that way you don't waste a whole thing of powder.  I have heard the DHA ones are good for upset bellies but I don't know I would say there should be come kind of comparison website somewhere on the web, that gives pros and cons of the different formulas.  Good luck

What I thought was my caring comment about the 'frying pan' was related to allergies, but I could have been more direct.  What Imeant was that when they are already so sensitive (digestively) sometimes it is because of allergies.  I had a child who could not eat any formula (not soy not dairy not special ones, not corn, nothing)--and later only maybe 10% of known food.  He's still small for his age.

BTW, and I mean this gently, I think everyone was quite respectful in giving you "suggestions" and "help" (your original post did say that, not "names of brands") and you kinda bit their noses off. I know what it's like to have a baby in pain and be a new mom but umm have to say it will be a cold day before I would wish to answer one of your posts again (ouch).

With my DD, i had to wean her at 4 wks due to problems with my milk production.  We supplemented slowly replacing one feeding at a time.  We tried a few differnt formulas...Similac Advance, the we tried Enfamil Lipil, then we tried Nestle Goodstart supreme with iron and comfort proteins along with DHA and ARA.  That was the best for her stomach, comfort-wise.  Then she developed reflux.  I've tried every bottle under the sun to help her hold it down better.  I've found that the Platex Drop-in nurser was best because i can push virtually all of the air out of it before she drinks and it collapses to stop any more from getting in it.  Good luck!  I would agree with one of the above posters about trying the ready to eat cans instead of the powder..that way you don't waste too much money trying others.  Your pediatrician should actually be able to give you a few samples.  Mine gave me quite a few samples of Similac...and one of Enfamil.

Perhaps you misread my question...I wasn't looking for pros and cons of breastfeeding.  I was looking for ADVICE OR SUGGESTIONS on this situation.    My dd does not spit up a little...she is beyond a 'little" .  My 1st ds spit up a little, my 2nd ds didn't spit up at all...  I don't really care if YOU or anyone else would NEVER WEAN A 3 MONTH OLD.  Formula is a perfectly healthy form of feeding babies.  I was Formula fed because I too suffered from an intolerance to my mothers milk.  This is my baby, and I know others have gone through similar experiences, so i thought I would direct my question to them.  I wasn't taking a pole or a survey.  I AM going to wean her. Believe me, I would far rather nurse her, it is so much easier (in the middle of the night especially)  she is more content on formula,  her comfort is more important than my discomfort. I just wanted to know if there were any options i had overlooked.

Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions.  I went to the drug store today and bought a can of Enfamil for babies who spit up.  Hopefully that will help her more.  Thank you for your ideas.  I knew that SOMEONE would have experienced this same situation.  NO WAY my baby was alone on this one.

My DD has reflux.  The enfamil for babies who spit up is (i think, don'tquote me) thickened with rice cereal. I had to start my DD on cereal in her formula a few weeks ago.  It helped a lot.  Although some will tell you it's a horrible thing to do.  But my Dr. told me to do it.  If your Dr. told you to wean, then, by all means, wean.  Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for stopping breastfeeding.  You gave her 3 months of it.  That's more than some do.  I let people make me feel guilty. I cried the whole first week almost every time i fed her.  But it's what was best for my baby.  And now she's gaining weight the way she should.  Not every baby is the same..so you have to do what your baby needs for you to do.

thank you for your kind words.  it really irks me when people tell ME what's best for my baby.  hello? do i even know them; have they seen the soaking wet receiving blankets we go through after EVERY feeding. the dr's at emerg have!   do they think that i wouldn't consult a doctor?  do they think that i would do anything to harm my baby.  formula will not harm my baby, unless she is allergic, and no one can tell me that on this forum, i just wanted to hear others ideas.  i truly do thank you for your suggestions.  that is exactly what i was looking for.  no 2 babies r the same, but some have similarities.  thanx again

I am currently supplementing with formula.  I have spent the last three weeks trying to figure out what in my diet is causing my DD so much discomfort (along with the endless screaming and crying).  I tried Similac lactose free, soy, and ultimately Alimentum, a hypoallergenic formula.  I had the same problem with my DS.  Thus far, the Alimentum and brought many a peaceful nights.  Strange, huh?

Surprised as you may be, I was not referring to your response.  I also DID request the names of formulas if you read the post right before your comment.  I bit the nose off of one reply, because she was telling me that no one would be able to suggest a Formula because Breast feeding was best.  I didn't want this post to become anything more than suggestions from THOSE who have experienced similar circumstances. I do appreciate your advise, however, I already have been to 2 doctors regarding my dd's problem.

BTW..  enfamil for babies who spit up is working great.   very little spit up last night and this morning!

in the future look to see what the poster is asking...everyone is so quick to give opinions and that is fine, but, be prepared to get my opinion back!

oh i almost forgot, your comment about being a cold day before replying to one of my posts in the future was certainly not necessary, it was made just to get me going, and honestly, i have no reason to want you to reply to any of my posts...boo hoo  i was never bitter to you, even though you didn't answer my question.    i am NOW being BITTER..NO NO NO....C O L D  TO YOU! i would prefer to have my posts answered by those who understand the QUESTION!!!!!  (ouch)
