Severe cramping & spotting after weaning

by Mommy71, Feb 22, 2007 12:00AM
I stopped breastfeeding my son four days ago.  I had been weaning him for about three weeks.  The day after I stopped nursing completely I woke up at 3am with severe cramps.  I would compare the cramping to those one has when having a miscarriage.  They were extremely painful and lasted about 1/2 hour.  Later that day I began spotting and have continued spotting since then.  I have had my period once since my son was born (he is 10 months old now) and am overdue to have it again.  Could the spotting be my period?  More importantly, should I be concerned about the cramping I experienced.  There is 0% chance that I was/am pregnant, so that is not a concern.  Has this happened to anyone.  Thank you!

I went through a very similar experience only I had to stop breastfeeding after only 2 months.  I stopped in November and had a period in December.  It was HORRIBLE!  I had severe back cramps and I thought this was maybe due to carrying my daughter.  I had initial spotting and then a very heavy flow and erratic mood swings. I was due again in January but got it in February very late, again terrible mood swings and cramping.  I thought I was pregnant again too, since it was so late.  I am actually going to go back on the pill if anything to get my hormones back to normal again.  Good Luck!

That's interesting, as I've noticed that I am super emotional again, just like after I gave birth.  EVERYTHING is making me feel weepy.  I'm guessing it might have to do with the fact that I didn't want to stop nursing either and I suppose I'm in a state of "mourning".  Thank you for letting me know about your experience.

I am in the proxess of weaning my baby and I am facing severe cramping in my legs, hands, arms and feet. I am almost 5 months pp right now. Further a bit of nausea and a feeling of heaviness in the head. Have these symptoms too been observed by anyone?
