Sexual Intercourse after a D&C

by Erin_Jane, Sep 15, 2009 08:15AM
I am 15 days post- D&C after discovering @ 12 weeks pregnant that there was no fetal heartbeat. My doctor said not to have sexual intercourse until my follow up appt. with him (another week and a half away), and to wait 2 cycles to get pregnant. However, I have done a lot of research and some people get pregnant right away after their miscarriage. I have decided to wait until after my first cycle to try to get pregnant, but I would like to resume sex with my husband. The problem is, he absolutely refuses as he is dead set on going by what the doctor says, even though I physically feel fine and have not bled since the second day after my D&C!
Has anyone else on here had a D&C and resumed sex before their post-D&C appt.? I am anxious to get back into the groove and get pregnant soon! Thanks for your help~

I had a D&C on 9/3 and my doctor said no sex for 2 weeks....so I'm almost there and feel like there is no reason why we can't resume activities since I stopped the little bit of spotting I had by the 10th.  I am waiting to hear from my doctor's office today on my HCG levels, so if they are back down below 5, I think I may not wait until Thursday!

Why don't you call your doctor's office and find out if it is ok to start early as you haven't been bleeding.  My doc didn't make a follow up appt so I guess that is why he said 2 weeks.

I thought that two weeks sounded sufficient as well...thanks for the advice, I think I will call. It's just always so hard to know since it seems every doctor has a different opinion! My D&C was 9/1 so we're pretty close :)

I had a D&C a year ago and the doctor told me to wait for four weeks to resume sex and two cycles to try and conceive again. It took me almost a year exactly to conceive. I think all doctors say something different, but my best advice would be to listen to your own body.

You're so lucky.  After my D&C I bled for SIX weeks!  There was no resuming sex for us for a long time.  Everyday I saw the blood was a reminder of what had happened.  I was so depressed.  It got better when the bleeding stopped.  I'd say go for it.  But be careful.

I would not let just bleeding be your guide, but your hCG levels too, as the first poster said.  Once they are below 5, if you are also feeling normal and not bleeding, it seems like everything would indicate there is no remaining tissue or any other problem.

I work at a hospital and see my doctor daily; maybe I'll ask her if I can run down to lab and have my hCG level drawn to check that much out.
I agree, jennyb473 that I am lucky to have such little bleeding. This is my 4th miscarriage (including 1 ectopic where I lost my fallopian tube) and I bled so much with the others, though I did not have a D&C until this one. So even though I have been through this tragedy before, the situation is a little different and being that my cervix was forcefully opened to perform the D&C, I'm more worried about infection and stuff...
I just desperately want to be back to normal and be pregnant again! ;(

I had a DNC on August 26 and was 12 weeks. It was a blighted ovum. My doctor said I only had to be on pelvic rest 2 weeks and could start TTC then as well. So we will see in a week if im pregnant! I can't wait. By the chinese lunar calendar this was my last month this year to concieve a boy...although I don't care, just want a healthy baby, we really would like to have boy. Good luck to you.
