Spina bifida occulta: risks to pregnant women

by Spot's Mom, Jun 12, 2003 12:00AM
I am a woman who has been diagnosed with spina bifida occulta--I was born without one disk and have another disk that is partially undeveloped in my lower back. It is painful and I have suffered lower back pain my whole life. Now that we are looking at possibly having a child, I am worried that I will suffer some complications due to my condition. I know I will experience pain, but I want to know details of what else might affect me. I also know that I should take folic acid so that my child will not get this disease. I am mostly worried about delivery and if I should opt for a c-section due to this condition and acute arthritis of the tailbone. The arthritis in my tailbone is from a complication/surgery I had due to the spina bifida occulta.

Every site I have looked at talks about risks for the baby, but not about risks for me.
