Sun Block/Neurlogist Update

Sun Block/Neurlogist Update

Ok, I went to the beach on Saturday with my 1 year old and I put sunblock - (the good stuff in the pink bottle - water babies) all over her.  Even under her suit per the derm's suggestion.  I re-applied over and over again esp on her face and shoulders.  We were there for about an hour and my boyfriend was even getting annoyed that I kept bugging her with the sunblock. WELL - she has a little sunburn.  Nothing bad.  I am sure she does not even feel it but it is there and I feel like a horrible mom.  What the heck?  Suggestions from experienced mom's with kids who love the sun please????  How often do I apply? - I even put it in her hair.

PS.  As some of you know my dd had a neurology appt yesterday.  She had her 4th "episode" two weeks ago after we thought we were passed this.  Neurology said again that she is fine and very advanced for her age.  The nurse could not believe she was only one with her speech and ability to point things out that you ask her (nose, belly button, etc.)  They are 99.9% sure she is not having seizures at all that sometimes she just gets "that sick".  They said some babies can get a fever of 104 and be fine while others get a fever of 101 and pass out.  Which is what they think is happening to Eva.  All her "episodes" were followed by some type of illness - 1 infection the rest viral.  Still just as urgent to get her to the hospital - just as serious as a seizure but I was taught how to inflict pain in order to calm myself.  If she responds I know she is ok.  If I can get her to CHOP during these crazy spells they will do a 24 hour EEG.  Right now it is useless because she is fine.  When the spells happen and I call 911 they will not take me to CHOP.  Too far they say - it is literally 10 minutes from my house.

So all good news for now.  Thank you all for your prayers.

PS.  Anyone ever had to put their babies on Bethanicol (Spell) for Reflux and/or floppy airway?  Eva was on this for a couple weeks and I stopped it.  I did not like her reactions to it.

Thanks.

My only comment is to take her to CHOP yourself.  Do not call 911 unless she seems worse than usual.  If its only 10 min away...heck, by the time you call 911, they arrive on scene, take her vital signs, and load her up and go...it would take a lot longer than taking her to CHOP yourself.

If she's breathing during these episodes, throw her quickly in the car and go like crazy.

Hey - Sorry to hear about her little sunburn but she'll be alright.  Abby still gets pink...not burned but pink.  As you know....she did get burned by coffee when she was 1 so we always lift up the clothing and put it on her chest/belly....still it gets red.

I load Abby up with the stuff too....every 2 hrs.  Were you at the shore?  At the shore I am extremely careful....every 2 hrs or less.

As for her episodes...I used to get that way with a fever too.  Not having a seizure but passed out....unresponsive...my parents never hit the panic button though because that's just how I was with a fever.....

Now my niece was the same...Fever 101 or above....unresponsive and every once in awhile....seizure.  But then she grew out of it....She never had another seizure after she turned 2......

Good luck to you....Give her kisses from me.

Thanks - I tried to take her myself this last time but when she would not wake up once I got on the BLVD I got scared and called 911 from my car.  They made me pull over and met me on the road and again - Still would not take me there.  ARGH!  She is always breathing but shallow so that scares me too.  The sad thing is I am getting used to it so I thought I could drive myself the last time but I got scared.  My next door neighbor is a nurse and she said she would go with me whenever it happens just bang down her door but she was at work.  Anyway, The neurologist showed me about the inflicting pain part and to drive her myself - just inflict pain during the ride and if she responds we are good so that is the plan for the next time.

Thanks for your help.

Hey Girlfriend - Thank you so much for your reply - Pink is right.  That is what she turned Pink in little areas.  it sounds like your neice has the same experiences as Eva.  That is very reassuring to hear she outgrew them.  I am much better right now with all of this after talking to the doctor again yesterday.  I am almost glad it happened again to prepare me.

How is Abby and Jake?  Did you go to Sesame Place yet?

The kids are great.  Still so in love with each other and bestest friends.

They really know how to make each other laugh.  I'll hear Jake cracking up to the point of getting hiccups and realize it's Abby doing something funny.

And vice versa....I can't believe the added joy Jake has brought to all of us, but especially Abby.

I'm sure the little pink is fine.  Nothing damaging....oh that mother's guilt is a killer.  I lather Jayden too, he's so pale, even being hispanic, you would think he would get tan...lol.

I'm glad to hear that Eva is doing ok.  I agree with peek, that you should drive to CHOP yourself...hopefully everything will turn out fine and she will outgrow this.  Poor baby...it's probably worse for you then it is for her.  She probably passes out and feels like she's sleeping, it's you who goes through the emotional rollercoaster.  Hugs to Eva and to you as well...it's not easy dealing with what you go through with Eva.

I have found the best sunblock to be bullfrog.............I swear by it.  I have used it since my 11 yr old ds was a baby.  he is fair and so is my 2 yr old dd.  We live in Florida so we spend a lot of time at the beach or in the pool.  I use it and only reapply maybe 1 to 2 times while we are out and they have never even got pink unless it was a spot i missed.  Good look with your lil one and her episodes, i will keep her in my prayers.

I used the water babies on Brody and he also got pink when we were out in the sun. Even after we kept reapplying it. Glad to hear they are sure she doesn't have any neurological issues. That must be a relief!

Hey.. Somehow I missed this post.  I'm glad to hear she's doing better!

Soraya and I were out both days this weekend and it was pretty dang hot over in ny.. Reaching 99-101 in some places.  I took her to the park that had all these different type of sprinklers. The first day, we werent prepared for her to get wet (we just stumbled across the park while walking around) but it was so hot that I took of everything but her pamper and let her get wet. I bought the sunblock for her ($11 Yikes!) but surprisingly, she was ok. And I did like you did, I kept applying every time she came out of the water. Second day we took her (more prepared) I took a hat with us and let her get wet with the hat. Also, applying often.  No burn but, some color. Maybe try another brand? I'm not sure which one I had but, I can leave you a note and let you know?
Also, fairer skins tend to burn faster. Alex, is fair with freckles and he burned.  She's closer to my complexion, so she was ok.  I was fine. Just from my observation anyway.
