Suntanning during pregnancy??

Suntanning during pregnancy??

Hey There,
Just a question.. Is it safe to sun tan during pregnancy?? Not tanning bed.. But laying out in the sun for a hour?? Just as long as i dont get to hot or lay out long enough to get burned badly... Also is it safe to use tanning oils?? I plan on using Australin Gold tanning oil and it has hemp in it.. I know its a funny question.. just trying to be safe.. I will be asking my doctor when i see him to be sure.. just wondering if any of you ladies did it during pregnancy.. thanx for any questions =c)

Heh,

Yes it's safe to go sun tanning, I have a good friend of mine who works at a medical clinic and we went tanning all the time. I can't remember if she used tanning oil though, she would just jump in the water if she got to warm. I think she used tanning lotion instead of oil, I'm glad to hear that everything is going well with your pregnancy.

I have always heard just the opposite, as far as tanning beds go. In fact most reputable places won't let you go tanning if you are pg. The main problem is overheating, which is likely to happen even if you are in for a short time. I would avoid this as there is no need to tan, take a break and minimize the risk to yourself and your little peanut.

I've never been pregnant, except for when I was 17 and had a m/c. My friend that I was telling you about was the one that was pregnant and tanning, I think she was using the Hawaiian Tropic one with a high uv on it so she wouldn't burn. My sister did the same thing as well, and she is as white as a ghost. She did get a little darker, when my nephew was born in October.

Just keep from overheating, that is the biggest concern. But I would still avoid the risk, it is worth being a little pale for a few months (you are speaking with one of the fairest women alive, the lightest foundation made is almost too dark) It is just like giving up drinking and smoking, it is worth it for 9 months.

you know i'm glad you asked b/c i have been wonderng the same thing... i always love to lay out and tan. plus DH and i go to the beach alot in the summertime... ihave to be in a wedding next month.. and you know how that is.. everybody will hit the tanning bed, but i can't. well at the tanning salons and hair salons they have this thing called fake bake.. it's airbrush tanning... and it's not orange either..it looks jsut like your tan form the sun.. so I'm going that route...it's suppossed to be safe and it cost around 35.00 for the first treatment and then 20.00 after that... but one treatment does the trick... you are this funny red color for about 4 hours after you get it..but it turns a nice dark brown color in jsut one visit.. i might add that i am pale as well. so you might want to call around and check out this option too. hope

I used to be a sun worshiper.  I also used to tan in a tanning bed about 4 days a week.  When I got pregnant last March, I stopped going to the tanning bed and started using self tanner.  Even after I miscarried, I still continued using self tanners instead of going back to the tanning bed.  My skin looks better now than it has in years.  I have tried every self tanner out there, and so far I really like the one that Neutrogena makes.  It's like a foam and you can see the color as you apply it.  That way you don't miss a spot, or end up all streaky.  People swear that I'm still using the tanning bed because it looks so natural.

Like Hope was saying, the "Mystic Tan" is pretty cool too.  It's like a self tanner at the tanning salons, where you stand nude in a shower type booth and it sprays you like a car wash.  I used to do the Mystic Tan when I was doing fitness competitions.  Just be careful, because your knees, elbows, and toenails and hands will turn orange if you don't first cover them with the lotion that they provide in the booth.  It's cool if you don't want to mess with self tanners at home.

It's ok to lay out in the sun, but just be careful, because I've heard of several people getting that pregnancy mask from sun exposure, and after that it took years to get rid of it.  However, with my son 10 years ago, I laid out and got pretty tan, and never got the pregnancy mask.....I guess everybody's different.

There are lots of safe ways to stay beautiful while we're pregnant and there's not a thing wrong with WANTING to stay beautiful during this time.

Hey, I have a question for you Silo,

You mention that you like Neutrogena's Self-tanner, is that the "instant bronze" one? cuz I was interested in buying that but thought it was just a lotion tan that would rub off on clothes and after taking just one bath/shower.

Does it go into the skin like other self-tanners that last a couple of days and wears off slowly?  Does it stain your clothes or anything?  I'm a big fan of self-tanners as I'm very fair too.  Please let me know more about this tanner.  I thought it was just like a "colored lotion" that wore off immediately (like after washing hands/arms)......

Glad to hear AF came, now you can resume ttc.  Just have sex everyday from about cd7 all the way to cd20.  That's one way to cover your bases.

The Instant Bronze is what I've been using.  The only thing that does suck about it, is that it does was off when you shower, but not completely.  I use it about every other day and I'm pretty tan now.  It does get on the inside of your clothes too, but it comes out in the wash.  I like it because I don't look orange and because it doesn't make me smell weird.  After I apply it, I have to use like an exfoliating scrub to get it off of the palms of my hands.  It comes in light, medium and dark.  I use the medium.

Great, thanks- I think I'll try using that.

And I think I am going to just BD the whole month to make sure...(that is if I ovulate at all!).  Wish me luck!

CD means "cycle day"  like CD 20 would be the 20th day of your cycle.  The first day of your period is CD1
