Symptom fluctuation in first trimester

by Cheti, Mar 01, 2005 12:00AM
I am 37 and had a missed miscarriage last summer. During that pregnancy, my hCG levels were high but didn't quite double in two days. I am currently 6 weeks pregnant and my hCG & progesterone levels are strong and doubling. Last week I had mild to moderate. I also had breast soreness that seemed to be getting worse. This week (week 6) I have noticed a decrease in the nausea and the breast soreness seems to have leveled off (but have not disappeared). Is it normal to have fluctuations in symptom severity during the first trimester? or could this indicate the possibility of another missed miscarriage? I am not scheduled for an ultrasound until the end of next week.

I also had a missed miscarriage back in May of
'04.  The baby had passed away but I had no symptoms that there was a problem, in fact I had an ultrasound on the Wednesday and everything was fine but by Saturday I was hemorraging in my drs office. I did notice a decline in my nausea and breast tenderness but just chalked it up to being lucky that I didn't have them anymore.  If you are having real concerns call your dr and let him know that you think there may be a problem and maybe they can push up your U/S just to give you piece of mind.  I was already 11 weeks when we lost our baby so I just assumed I was close enough to the 12 week time that this was probably normal.  Best of luck and I sincerely hope everything goes well for you, please keep us updated to how things are going.

I had your same concerns when I was in my first trimester (I also had a previous missed m/c). One day my boobs would kill and the next day I could practically punch my boobs and they didn't hurt. It's normal to fluctuate. It's not necessarily a sign that something is wrong. If your numbers are good, that's a wonderful sign that all is fine. I bet your symptoms will be strong again soon. And if not, consider yourself one of the lucky ones that doesn't have that misery for very long.

I wish you well.  I have read symptoms can come and go.  They are not always an indicator of a m/c.  A lady at the site below was told that she had a blighted ovum and needed a D&C.  She wanted to test her doctor's diagnosis.  She even had lost her symptoms.  A few weeks after the doctor's diagnosis, the baby showed up and everything was fine.  I hope the same for you!

Thank you for all of your support. I'm feeling my symptoms again and I hope that it's a positive sign!

When I was in the early stages of pregnancy, I only got sick one time, my boobs would hurt one day and then the soreness would go away for a few days and come back.  That is pregnancy, everyday you will feel very different.
