Thrush, or something worse?

by prairiegirl, Mar 22, 2006 12:00AM
Last year my 8 month old son and I were diagnosed with thrush. He was born by C-section and we were given antibiotics. We were given a prescription for Nystatin(him,liquid... me, cream) which cleared my son's thrush but did little for me. I however had deep terribly painful fissures at the base of my nipples that bled, red shiny skin, deep breast pain, etc.. After a round of Diflucan my son healed again but for me things were not much better, although my fissures had healed some my son broke out with thrush again. I decided because of the extreme pain of nursing and the fact that his thrush continued to return to wean him. That was a year ago and he was 11 months. He has never had thrush since. For me on the other hand although the fissures healed, the skin in that area stays red and shiny and once in a while gets a white crust then a very small fissure always in the same original place on both nipples and my areola also gets flakey. This seems to come and go, never a continuous problem. There is no pain associated with any of this but my nipples have stayed a deep purple color that has a white center like the blood is constricted if I get cold. Both nipples are affected. The Nurse Practitioner that I see has only given me a very large tube of Nystatin (which is now half gone) to use when I get flakey or have small fissures. Nystatin works well but in a month or so I get it back.
So my question to a Doctor would be, Should I be worried about Paget's Disease or could this really still be thrush after all this time(over a year)?

I'm so sorry but I don't know much about thrush or Paget's Disease.  I just wanted to say that is I were you, I'd get a second opinion.  Maybe you could even consult a Dermatologist.  Best of luck.

My baby don't have the problem of oral thrush until he is about 17 plus months.  During that time, i'm still nursing him direct, but with his thrush that is so bad, its infected my nipples and did not realised it until few days later.  I got the medicated cream from the dr and advice me its time to wean him as my baby is approaching 18 months and if not the thrush fungus will be passed back to the baby again.  Initial, Im a bit reluctant, coz I want my baby to have the best nutrient.  After much consideration, i heed the advice and decideed to wean him off slowly and eventually completely.  I'm healed in about less then 2 weeks.  To prevent oral thrush, clean and wash the baby mouth daily, that is what i'm still doing and it works!
