Took Cytotec for missed m/c yesterday - worried about not enough bleeding

by kat210, Sep 22, 2006 12:00AM
Hi everyone, I'm pretty new here, but this forum has gotten me through this tough experience.  I was 11w5d with my first pregnancy when I took the Cytotec yesterday since there was no fetal pole/heartbeat found on ultrasound.  My doctor told me I would experience a lot of bleeding (as much as having to change a pad every 15 min for 2-4 hours) and feel a lot of pain.  Well, I took the Percocet he prescribed for the pain so I did experience pain, but not as bad as I expected (let's hope I'm not speaking too soon!).  But the bleeding wasn't as much as I expected.  I felt a few things pass when I would actually sit to change the pad, but actually changing wasn't as often as I thought it would be.  Could it be that not everything passed and I'll have to have a D&C anyway?  Thank you to anyone who can share their experience, you don't know how much it's appreciated.

I dont know about cyotec I was given the methotrexate shot.I took a wk. for me to start bleeding & only bled for 3 days.A wk. after I bled for almost a mon.I would'nt worry to much about not bleeding to much. changing more than two pads in 1 hour could also be a hemerage.Have you had your levels checked after I stopped bleeding mine whent down to 6.Usually this could tell you if you've passed your m/c or if there's still something there (stuck).Dr. will probalby make you a sono. if you did pass everthing you would'nt need a d&c.Take care,Nanis

Sweetie, i know it's very scary. I NEVER EVER had a surgery before mine, and believe me, it was rough!....i cryed and cryed, but it was all in vane cuz i didn't even know when was it finished.
With the cytotec, you will expell the tissue, but sometimes some gets stock in there and you might end up having a DNC anyway. A DNC is not painful even on the days following the procedure, and you will be over with it in a day. I am just trying to put all in a balance and see what the best option was with me and would be for you too.
A natural m/c can last daaaays!, a DNC is over in 10 minutes....
Is up to you hon, either way you have my support here and please know you are not alone.
(((hugs)))

sweetie, i don't know why your doctor would not perform a DNC instead! you are too far along!...if you are scared i would recomend to call him and tell him all you feel! i had same thing happened and i was around 12 weeks...i had a DNC scheduled with no questions about it....
Best of lucks to you!!!! =)

Thank for the response.  He actually recommended the D&C but not because I was so far along - because that was his personal preference when he & his wife went through a similar experience.  He gave me the option of the medication or the procedure, but I am just a nervous person when it comes to any type of surgery.  He said both were equally good options which is why I opted for the cytotec.  I have a follow up ultrasound with him in less than two weeks so I guess I'll just have to wait to hear if everything was expelled then.  But it's nice to hear from you (as well read other people's experience) about their D&C's and how smoothly they went.

Hi Kat--you may want to call the doc to double check. I took Misoprostol for mine and I bled a whole lot. Then again, I took it for four days so that it kept my uterus contracting so that I could get rid of everything. I was going through a pad every half hour to hour for about three days, then it began to taper off.

ACtually, the misoprostol is the generic name for cytotec, that's what I was given as well.  I only took one dose and it worked for me so I was lucky.  It took about 4 hours for me, but got really intense the last 2 hours and I passed the clots and sac in about 15 minutes once it started.  The bleeding was heavy for me, but it was worst during that time.  I bled really heavy for several days, took about 2 weeks.  All of my tissue passed fine.  My Dr. recommended trying that first since I had a blighted ovum and the tissue wasn't as much to pass, especially an empty sac.  I'm glad I went that way, I did notice a few days after that I passed one last clot, then just bled.  I think it depends on the Dr. and the case, if there's no baby they aren't always as quick to reccommmend the surgery.  Just follow up with your Dr.  PS, you are so lucky you got pain meds, I forgot to ask and it was not fun.  Your Dr. will probably do a follow up, good luck and take care.

Wow, I'm dealing with the same exact issue!  I took 1 Mifeprex on Wednesday, and 4 pills of Cyotec today (Friday).
I had some cramping, but not as bad as anticipated, passed some clots and that's it.  Not bleeding at all.  Just when I go to the bathroom there will be some blood discharge.  I'm about four weeks preg.
I have been losing my mind worrying that I probablly didn't miscarry.  Now I'm begining to think I might have ectopic pregnancy.  I'm not sure I can wait till Monday to talk to my doctor, contemplating about going to the ER.
I know I'm probablly worrying it too much abou this.  I hope somebody out there can put my mind at ease about this issue.
Thank you for listening...

I had the option to take Cytotec or get the D & C. I took the meds so I could be at home. It was very painful, I went to the Dr due to a fever only to find the the pills did not work. I was sent to the hospital for a D&E. I wish I would have opted for the D&C in the first place it was a lot less painful. Good Luck

Hello everyone. I wanted to give my two cents...lol...but also have a question... I miscarried over a month ago, but the doctor's didn't notice until last Thursday because my uterus and placenta were still growing, and I still appeared to be pregnant. No symptoms or signs at all!! But once they did another ultrasound there was no heart beat. So the doctor gave me Misoprostol on Monday and I had some mild cramping for a little while, along with some light bleeding. I passed 2 penny sized blood clots. Then the next day everything stopped. So he gave me another round of it on Thursday and the cramps were stronger, but still not intense, and I bled a little more than the first time. And everything stopped that night, just a few hours after I'd taken it. Not much came out, and I barely cramped. I have to wait it out through the weekend to see what happens, but if nothing shows up then it's back to the hospital for another ultrasound and possibly a D&C. Does it sound like everything passed? I've had 3 healthy babies before this and never have had a miscarriage, so I have no idea what to expect. Thanks for listening.
