Toxemia

Toxemia

Hi everyone!  I have a doctors appointment this evening but was just curious has anyone got toxemia?  My ankels and feet are so serverly swollen and have been for weeks.  I soak them in a bucket of ice at night and always keep them elevated.  But nothing seems to help.  they actually seem to get worse.  by the way im 31 weeks pregnant if that means anything.  Also my vision does get blurry all the time ( I thought it was normal) for pregnancy until i read it on the internet that it was also i sign of toxemia.  Everytime i go to the doc's my blood pressure is ok though.  Thanks for any imput, i realize noone's a doc just curious if anyone has experianced the same thing.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I never experienced this personally but I believe that is what caused my cousin to go into premature labor (she was 28 weeks).  The baby was fine at delivery.  But her blood pressure was up and she was severely swollen and stuff.  I would make sure and mention this to the doctor and tell them you are worried.  Toxemia is NOT GOOD for your or the baby.

I am 34 weeks and as of last Friday my feet started swelling to astronomical proportions.  But the same thing happened with my DS so I'm not worried this time around.  I did however call my doctor and explain what was going on.  I took my blood pressure here at work and it's normal.  It has been since the beginning.  I am continuing to swell as we speak!  My face, my fingers, everything!  I can only wear flip flops because my feet fit into nothing else.  You may be okay, swelling just happens sometimes.  The only thing that worries me is your vision disturbances.  They asked me about that when I called in.  They asked about dizziness, headaches, seeing "flurries" things like that.  They said I should come in if any of these things happen.  But you still could be okay, but of course better safe than sorry.

I'm sorry to hear that your going through this, hopefully everything will turn out for the best for you and the baby! I was diagnosed with Toxemia in my 32 weeks, only because the Doctor's noticed I have had high blood pressure for months now and some protein in my urine. My feet were alittle swollen but the doctor said not too bad. I didn't have blurry vision but they told me if I get that way to call them immediately. They put me on strict bedrest and they had me monitoring my blood pressure at home and if it went up, go to the ER. I felt fine though. it's not a risk to the baby but a high risk to the mother to have toxemia. Long story short, my son was born healthy at 38 weeks. I was fine after he was out, everything went away. Hope my story could help! Good Luck!!!

Make sure your doc is really looking at your b/p, not just looking to see if it is above the normal range set for everyone, but to look at how high it is now versus the beginning of your pregnancy. I have always run really low, generally 80/50 or 60. With my oldest, my b/p went from 80/60 to 138/88, which still appears within normal limits, but for me it was nearly a 60 point jump in systolic and a 28 point jump in diastolic, well out of my normal range, hence why I put on over 20 lbs of water weight in my last 2 weeks of pregnancy, not to mention spilling protein in my urine, which they assumed was due to my m/s interfering with my ability to eat well . It was not until I was pg with my second son that I started researching more about it and realized that despite not being over the "normal" range, that a 30 point jump from your baseline is considered abnormal and needs to be treated as such.

Pre-eclampsia is serious, those of you whose mothers had it are very lucky that someting didn't happen. Push for answers, push hard if necessary.

I had toximia with my first.  It was horrible.  Towards the end of my pregnancy is when I started getting it real bad.  I went in, and he said that I needed to go on bed rest.  Luckily, that night, my water broke.

Anyway, my calves were the size of my thighs, my thighs the size of tree trucks, I kid you not.  I weigh 130 lbs, but gained over 60 lbs.  It sucked!

Good luck to you.  Keep your legs elevated, and don't move around tons if you don't have too.

thanks so much for all your imput, im the same way too...no shoes fit!!! my flip flops are even hard to put on and you should see the dents they put in!  Also i thought it was just my vision going bad so i actually have an eye exam tomorrow, we'll see, kinda nervous though.  I did mention last time i went to the doc all this (it wasn't my norm Doc) and he said as long as my blood pressure is ok then im ok.  But this is getting crazy!!!

Swelling alone is not a sign of toxemia but vision problems coupled with the swelling may be. I had "gross edema" from about 20 weeks on with DD and bp was perfect. My legs were so swollen it was frightening to see! Good luck at your appt this afternoon and keep us posted.

Not all women show very high blood pressure with
pre-eclampsia/toxemia. You need to have your urine checked for protein as well. With my daughter I was so swollen that I had "cankles". You know, when your calves and ankles are the same width. My blood pressure was up 20 points, but wasn't considered high. I was beginning to leak protein in my urine though. This can be a very serious situation. I suggest dropping by the Dr.'s office, and just insisting that a nurse check your urine and blood pressure. That's what I did. At the least it will set your mind at ease. It could save you from disaster.

Hi,
My mom had toxemia with me and I was just fine:-)  she was on bedrest for a bit before I was born.  It is more dangerous for you than the babe, I would see the doc quickly though b/c of your blurred vision.
Take care!

Your bp may be withing normal limits by dr standars (ie 120/80 or less) but what was your bp at the beginning of your p.  if your bp is, for you, normally 90/50  and now you are 120/80 your bp technically is high b/c your norm is so low.  You should not have blurred vision, unless of course you need glasses.  Also watch for spots infront of your eyes, h/a, dizziness, or epigastric pain(pain above your belly but below your ribs usually it goes from rib to rib not necessarily isolated to one spot).  I also agree that you should be checked for protien in your urine as well as liver function and platelets.
