Traveling to Mexico - is it okay if you are PG?

Traveling to Mexico - is it okay if you are PG?

My husband and I are ttc and we hope to be pg ASAP of course.  We would like to plan a trip for our anniversary in April, and I have been seeing a lot of good deals.  We are looking to go to Cozumel.  I just didn't know if it was dangerous, especially in the first 12 weeks to go to Mexico, considering the danger of the water, etc.  Can anyone help or have any experience?

I live right near Mexico... about an hour and 10 minutes.. we go there alot.. currently I am 29 weeks.. there are a few precautions that you should take...

DO NOT drink the water!!!!! bottled water only...

make sure that wherever you eat..that its deemed safe... the way the food smells there is AWESOME!! lol however.. I would only eat from an establishment such as where you are staying.. ensuring that its food that been properly cooked.. etc etc..

its a good idea to take along a passport now.. BOrder Patrol told us that .. Ive lived here since 94... and thats the first time we heard that one... we never needed it before.....

since we live so close.. we go almost every month or two... we love it... and........... you can find some great bargins there as well.. off the beaten path.. not the normal wares they sell on the street..  we found some great furniture .. hand carved..

hope that whatever choice you make you both have a great time...

take care

HI, I am TTC and planning a cruise in March, and my Dr said go ahead, but she prefers to wait till after 12 weeks and before 37 weeks. in case of early m/c or premarure birth.Otherwise she said just to be sure to walk alot in airplane to reduce risk of leg blood clots. I was also told not to drink water in previous trip to Mexico and I wasnt pregnant-just universal precaution. She also said bring meds and any medical info-copy of records in case something happens.

Enjoy your trip!

Be careful of unpasturized dairy and fruit juices. They dont have as strict standards for pasturization so stay away from Mexican cheeses such as Cotija and others that may be raw. Definately dont drink the water unless bottled. You will probably be eating out a lot so you should be fine. Also, Raw veggies might get washed with regular water so I would not eat salads  or veggies that are not cooked. You cant be too safe when it comes to your little peanut!!

Have fun!

Take your own bottled water if you can, or buy a name brand there like Dasani. Some of the "bottled" water there is fake.

I absolutely loved Cozumel!!! you're going to have so much fun.  Like someone mentioned, drink bottled water only and eat from the places that look safe.  I'm soooo jealous, can you take me with you? :):)  LOL, HAVE FUN!!

Wow, I live in Mexico City - but DH and I concluded that they save the safe stuff for residents!

I think the other posts about cut it. Avoid salads, too- in any case, even in the states I eye spinach with suspicion. And the typical- cheese that might not be pasteurized, water that might not be purified- in any form. No raw seafood, the same rules as everywhere else.

Don't eat street food, unless it's tamales- they're steamed beyond sterilization!

Have fun! I've never been able to afford anywhere nicer than Acapulco, but I hear Cozumel is really nice.

another thought to consider... i have been feeling so aweful (i'm 9.5 wks), and can't imagine that i'd have been able to enjoy myself... even in mexico. of course, some ppl don't get early pregnancy symptoms, but you may want to keep this in mind when planning. i can't do long carrides, so the thought of a plane ride would make me nervous (and i have never in my life had motion sickness!) if i were you, i'd plan for the second trimester.
when you do go, also try to avoid buffets. while they are so enticing and delicious, you are more likely to get food poisoning from a buffet.

i'm jealous.. and you have me thinking of a vacation.

We went to the Riviera Maya area when I was about 5 months along with DD and the only time I had trouble was from eating at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cozumel. I thought being a international establishment it would be safe bet over local joint but ate hamburger and got Montezuma's revenge big time! sorry tmi! anyway, don't drink beverages with ice made from local water, order meats medwell or well done, and our resort had lots of salads and fresh fruits but be careful there too as may be washed with untreated water- stick with things that can be peeled. You also sunburn more easily while pg so bring lots of sunscreen and have fun!

THanks so much for all the comments!!!!  We have been to Mexico several times and never had a problem....I just never thought of it in terms of being pg and worrying!  We might wait and plan it according to what happens with ttc.
