Twiceadopt; engorgement???

by mum2beagain, Apr 21, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I was just wondering how you were doing with the engorgement problem, I thought your origional thread would be too far away now to ask you there. I was thinking about it yesterday and another tip I was given to help even out the amount of milk produced in each side and ensure that baby gets enough hind milk was to only change sides every 3 hours or so. For example if I fed from my left side and an hour later he was hungry again offer the left side again and to keep doing this until either the breast was completely empty or the 3 hours were up. I am not sure if I am explaining this very well...let me try again!...

If he fed at 12.00 from the left and wanted feeding again at say 1.00 and there was still milk in the left breast I would offer him the left side again.
If after this feed at 1.00 he did not want to feed again until say 3.15 I would then feed him from the right at 3.15... and so on.

Does that make anymore sense??

Well I hope everything is going well any how.

good suggestion, thanks, i'll try that. the problem now is the side that was engorged (which has a slightly more favorable nipple, not completely inverted like the other) has become quite painful, the entire areola, when she sucks. there's no red spots, no cracks, nothing obviously wrong, other than its painful when she eats. i've been using lanisoh after every feed since day 1, so nothing on the surface looks wrong. does that sound like anything in particular?

thanks for your help. its very tempting to just throw in the towel, but formula has really gotten expensive in the 9 yrs since we last had a formula baby! also as i have asthma, ped. recommended breastfeeding if possible, to help baby not become asthmatic quite so early.

Hi there, don't mean to butt in. If your nipple is sore, try to get more of your areola into his mouth. Try different position/hold like cradle, football, or side-lying. I wish you the best. Please don't give up, it will become so easy after the probs are worked out.

I know what you mean I was sore too, if the latch is okay then it is probably just a case of your nippes toughening up so to speak. I would suggest letting the nipple completely air dry after feeding, don't use a cloth or anything to dry it off, and then apply lanosil.

Hope things get better, you are right the cost of formula is crazy!

you're right, its a little less painful when more boob is in her mouth, but i have enormous breasts (currently a 40k) with flat and inverted nipples, so the only way i've found to get it in at all is to sort of cup it, shove it into her mouth, then get my shoving finger out before she clamps down. this has to happen in a fraction of a second, otherwise it falls out and we have to try again.
