Ultrasound report reading wrong/ what do you do?

Ultrasound report reading wrong/ what do you do?

Ok, I have been battling this question for awhile and finally found the answer myself.  I've posted questions awhile ago about ultrasound reading weeks off from the LMP.  My daughter finally asked for the report from the hospital that did my daughters ultrasound and it read that her crown-rump measures 1.12cm and according to them averages 7.3 weeks pregnant. (wrong)

Well, I looked up on www.ob-ultrsound.net and the chart on there says that 1.12cm measures closer to 9 weeks.   So now that I found that information do I show the new doctor that my daughter has switch too?  Because they too were basing her due date according to ultrasound report instead of her word that she was further than that.  She goes back January 14th for her 2nd ultrasound.  PLus there was no measurement of the sac the only thing it said was, The uterus is appropriate in size for this gestation and no myometrial lesion is seen.  Heart rate of 160.   It makes me mad that they changed her due date from May 8th to May 26th.

What would you do if you were her and feel you are still right over the ultrasound?

She is young @ 17 and that is why I am probably so involved with this because I think the doctors take her age like she has no idea of what she is doing and tell her what they want.  I am from the old school and had 3 kids based on my LMP and they were all with in 3 days from that date.  People are human but I still think the doctors should have investigated this more with such a big difference in due dates instead of just pushing her word aside.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to take the info to her new Dr and talk with him/her about your concerns.
Good luck!

The baby will come when it's ready anyways! The Dr. can't make it stay in, I would mention it to her new Dr. but I probly wouldn't worry her (your daughter) too much with it! Good Luck to you and her both!

u/s are the close's you can get to the right due date. If you are worrie about this go and have a second u/s done....I thought, that they measure the sac to get your due date, not the fetus, So the fetus could be mearsuring Big for 7.3weeks......Ask the dr.

Actually the information that i found would probably make her feel a whole lot better.  Because she feels they don't listen to her.  It just frustrates me that doctors don't always listen to their patients.  Now when she goes for her second ultrasound (20week) one.  They will base it on 20 weeks when actually she will be closer to 23 weeks.  All tests done are based on ultrasound readings.......I know it is really no big deal but I just read about so many others with ultrasound reading worries and would like for everyone to look further into them if they feel they are being told wrong....

Thanks for the comments

When we went to the knew doctor we tried bringing this up to them and even showed them the ultrasound which looked further than 7.3 weeks...because my friend is preg also and her 7.3 ultrasound looked like a shrimp..They wouldn't even look at it...Anyway they will not listen because they don't want to go against another medical professional, I Guess.  Anyways she does go in 2 weeks for the ultrasound that checks you at 20 weeks.

thank you

I agree about the fetus measuring big........Now if i were a doctor and looking at a report and there was no sac measurement and a fetus with those measurements and my patient saying LMP with a 3 week difference would you have concerns.......Anyway the baby seems to be growing pretty well........It kicks and I even had the chance to feel it for the first time the other night....How exciting being a first time grandmom.

Here is one thing there may be some confusion about.

If the actual "fetal age" is ~7weeks, your daughter will be considered ~9 weeks pregnant (i.e. she conceived ~7 weeks ago).  So......... when the doctor said your daughter is ~7 weeks pregnant it is possible he was referring to age from conception.

The reason he didn't look at it, is probly b/c there is a range, she may have just been on the curve?? I'm not sure, for exaple, I KNOW how far along I am as it was timed conception, with a RE, well another girl was in the same boat, on this forum, her 10 week u/s opposed to mine was completely different, by ALOT! At first I was worried thinking there was somthing wrong with my baby, but there isn't. Her baby was literally twice the size of mine.

She will be ok. This far in it's not gonna make much of a differance. When you see that perfect baby at your U/S you will have some ease, when she comes 2 weeks early you can give them an I told you so :)

The doctor used a wheel that they go by and said that according to ultrasound her LMP was August 19th and conception September 2........And according to my daughter her LMP was August 2nd and she had intercouse on August 15th and some spotting on August 22nd (which i think was implantation) And the doctor agreed at first but when the ultrasound report came back they wiped away everything she told them and they based it on the ultrasound.......don;t u think that is wrong?

Is it possible your daughter conceived after August 15th?  Did she have unprotected intercourse after that date?  Ultrasounds are usually accurate to within a week  (and usually accurate to within a few days in early pregnancy).  A lot of times, the ultrasound gives the gestational age based on certain measurements - the doctor does not actually calculate the value manually.  Did the US say gestational age on the printout?

....Im just trying to understand where the doctor might be coming from or where any possible confusion might be arising (Im not trying to 2nd guess anything here by asking the questions).

Hi...I understand what you are saying about the ultrasound due date being off.  I had the same problem this year when I found out I was pregnant.  I knew exactly when my period was because I was in the hospital having a continuous EEG done for three days.  I had started my period two days before I went into the hospital (I was bummed, because I had to add tampons and pads to my already stuffed suitcase).  Anyway, the doctor told me that my due date was two and a half weeks past what it is supposed to be.  I argued with her (I am a nurse, so I know how things are supposed to work).  The first u/s (which was the vaginal u/s) told me my due date was the end of Feb., and when I went back for my second u/s (abdominal), the date was changed back to my regular due date that went along with my LMP.  Due to some complications, I have to have a scheduled c-section, and the doctor wants to do it at 38 weeks.  I have had five u/s in the last month and a half due to leaking amniotic fluid.  All of the u/s conclude with my original due date of my LMP.  Doctors often can be wrong, but most often they are right.  Mine was wrong, but won't admit that she was, but we still are able to have a great doctor/patient relationship.  As a nurse, I know that medical staff aren't perfect.  Just keep track of everything, and when it comes time for her next u/s, discuss with the doctor your concerns.  You can try discussing your concerns now, but more than likely the doctor won't change his mind.  The second u/s will probably help determine a more accurate date.  I don't know if any of this helped you or not, but I do know how you feel.  Best of luck to you and your daughter.  = Jackie

I understand.......I will give you exactly what the report says

Real-time ultrasound of the gravid uterus was performed transabdominall. There is an intrauterine pregnancy with an intact and normal-appearing gestational sac containing a single live embroy.  There is an appropriate amount of amniotic fluid.  The placenta is not yet visualezed.  measurement include crown-rum length of 1.12cm. This averages 7.3weeks +/-w.0 weeks.  The estimated date of delivery based on u/s measurements is May 26, 2009.  there is cardiac activity with a regular and a rate of 160.  Anatormic detail is limited.  No obvious abnormly is seen.  The uterus is appropriate in size for this gestation and no myometrial lesion is seen The ovaries are obsered by bowel gas.

Impression:  Live intrauterino pregnancy at 7.3 weeks

As far as my daughter tells me August 15 was the only time of sex (with a condom) it makes sense that she spotted on August 22.....I remember clearing when she spotted because she asked me to pick her up tampons and i said you are not due you had your period this month and she said I think i am getting ready because i am spotting.....Then when September came I was trying to keep track and September 30th I said did you ever get a period this month, she said no so i made her take a test and wala it was positive.........I know i sound like a crazy mother keeping track of her period but I knew she was getting close to a boy and tried to make her take the pill but of course the answer was I'm not having sex.....I said it takes one time in the moment!!!

I should learn my decimals..........1.12 is less than 1.3.......I am so wrong again, i think.   And on the chart is says 1.3 is 7.5 weeks....8.5 weeks is 1.9... 9 weeks is 2.2.   why would it say 1.12?  Why wouldn't it just say 1.1 or 1.2?  What the heck is 1.12?

one last thing - when was the US performed?  With that info I will crunch some numbers for you.
Blank
91555_tn?1260295083
Yes, 1.12 is less than 1.3.

1.12cm is a tad bigger than 1.10cm (by 0.02 cm).

It was done October 9th...........But Spade22, i think i am being brain dead but in decimals only go to .9 right?  So what is 1.12?  would that be between 1.1   and 1.2  ?   if so according the the crown-rump chart she would be 7.3week?    I was thinking 1.12 was greater than 1.3......I was never good at math.  But still there is no sac measurement and if you look at the u/s it still looks older than 7.3 weeks.
Blank
660990_tn?1230751522
Should the u/s tech have given the Sac Size?  Or just giving the crown-rump measurements good enough?  Well, I thought i was on to something.  When she goes January 14th, I will make sure to let you know what her new measurements are?

Spade22.....Her boyfriend felt the baby kick on December 19th which according to u/s put her 17.5 weeks pregnant........I felt the baby 2 nights ago kick 4 times which according to u/s she would only be 19 weeks but LMP almost 22 weeks.

If she would only be 19 weeks would i beable to feel the baby kick that well?

I would mention it, what is the harm? That is quite a difference in dates, I was thinking though maybe the assume with her age she doesnt have a regular cycle so that is why they didnt seem concerned with the change in date.
I have read so much about Doctors assuming due dates and then claiming babies are early or inducing b/c they are late. Babies will come when the are ready and I really think Doctors need to realize that. With in reason I guess to though. You dont want your baby really overdue, but with a wrong due date they could induce for no reason.
The doctor is there to answer questions and make sure the baby and mother are doing well, if you are at all concerned bring it up!! Good luck!

i just read the whole forum and 2 things stuck out in my mind, not that I know alot of about ultrasounds. You had menitoned they gave her a due date with the wheel....that wheel is based on a 28 day cycle, if you daughter doesnt have a 28 days cycle the wheel would be wrong. ( mine is 31 and i told the doctor that when he pulled the stupid wheel out and he added 3 days to my date) my first and 2nd ultrasound agreed with that date. also as far as i have read in my 3 pregnancy books most women will feel the baby kick from the inside between 18-20 weeks, but the baby wont be felt outside until closer to 24 weeks, basically b/c its to small. I am curretly 21 weeks and i feel her all the time but the hubby cant.
Just my 2 cents.

It has been so long for me to remember.....but that is why I question the due date so much....I felt 2 strong kicks on her right side in the lower ab area and two light ones on the left....Could it be she is skinny?

.Do you think measurements that early on could be so far off?  I mean her u/s looks so different that other 7.3 ultrasounds.....you can see the head, a round part for belly and arm and leg buds.....my friends u/s looks like a shrimp or tornado at that same time...

Plugging in numbers gave the same results as the "wheel".  A due date of May 26th implies your daughter conceived September 2nd and had her last period  August 19th.  This would put her at ~7.3 weeks on October 9th.

Only 2 explanations can account for this:

1) Your daughter got her dates mixed up and had intercourse AFTER August 15th
2) The US dating was incorrect but usually during the 1st trimester the numbers are certainly accurate to within a week.

You will get more information at the next US and at that time you can bring up your concerns if there is still a 2 week discrepancy.

"in decimals only go to .9 right? "

No.  Decimals can go to several "places".  0.9, 0.09, 0.00000000009 etc.

"would that be between 1.1   and 1.2  "

Yes - with the number being much closer to 1.1 than 1.2.  You can "round" it off to 1.1 for all intents and purposes.

"If she would only be 19 weeks would i beable to feel the baby kick that well? "

Absolutely!  Kicking can  be felt from the "outside" even earlier too. It all depends on the individual (shape, build, 1st pregnancy etc.)

Yes - smaller individuals tend to feel baby kick a little sooner than those who are not.

Honey, you are never going to make it through your daughter's pregnancy if you invest everything about it with such intensity of emotion.  A difference of opinion about gestational age is confusing, but it is not a life-and-death issue where grandma has to take a hand and get all angry at doctors.

Please try hard to let it be her pregnancy and not your pregnancy.  If you want her to feel like she is a capable human being, not your little baby who is still too young to be good at adult responsibilities in your eyes, you will let her do the talking with the doctor and the coping with communication issues there.  She NEEDS to be allowed to be capable -- she is going to be a mother.

Please do not take offense, I am suggesting this for both her sake and yours, and for a little baby to come who needs a calm, unflappable mother.

Yes....it is my first grandchild.......Not exactly the way i planned to become a grandmother.  I have two older children ages 23 and 21 that are boys and in would have made it easier if they were married and giving me my first.  But life has it's twist and it ended up my 17year old daughter unwed.   but you know God has plans and my daughter and i were becoming really far apart because she was just being a typical know it all teenager.  But now she and I are becoming so close right now because she needs me.......I hope it stays that way but I do want her to be responsible and know that she will be the mom and take care of this baby.  She is still in school and plans on finishing and becoming a nurse.....she loves Dr. G on cable and the show house and anything else in the medical field.  I pray she continues that dream.....I will still support in to full fill it.....Because she is and will always be my baby:)

Thank you.......I totally agree about being a mother who gets to involved....I make sure when she goes that she does the talking etc.   Thats why i love this site because i can talk ya know?   She is my baby and it hurts that I watch her frustrated with not know the answers.....I know it's not a big deal.....I guess i have always been the kid that asks why is this why is that?   I like direct answers.    I am so excited on the next u/s and the fact that she wants me to be so involved in her pregnancy........I always let her ask me to go with her........I never assume that i am going to the u/s appointment.

Thank you:)

MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO TO ULTRASOUND SCHOOL YOURSELF. I WOULDNT LET YOU OR ANYONE IN THE PATIENTS FAMILT INTO THE ULTRASOUND ROOM WITH ME. IF YOU LOOK THERE IS A ROUGH WEEK OF THE DATES THAT COULD BE OFF. YOUR TALKING mm AND IF YOU MEASURE IT AT 1.3cm HOW FAR ALONG ARE YOU NOW. LEAVE THE SONOGRAPHERS AND DOCTORS ALONE. ALL YOU WANT IS PRETTY PICTURES AND TO KNOW THE SEX ANYWAY. DOESNT MATTER THAT WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THE BABY AND MOM ARE OK
