Umbilical cord odor?

Hey all...

Just wondering if any of your newbies had an odor while the umbilical cord was falling off?

This is my 2nd dd...and it didn't happen with her-but it did happen to my nephew...his feel off a day or two after the odor came around....

Any thoughts?

Any odor would be a sign of bacteria/infection and needs to be evaluated by a Dr.

My DD's cord got really stinky.  I was horrified.  I asked about it at her doc appointment and he said if it's infected you'll know it right away because their belly will be all red surrounding the belly button.  I was just to clean her cord with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol at most diaper changes.  I was doing the new thing where they tell you not to use anything at all to clean it - big mistake.  Her cord fell off within about 3 days after and it really helped diminish the smell.

It shouldn't really smell as it is a sign of infection.  Make sure that you're looking out for other signs for infection like redness, swelling, etc.  How are you doing with the two little kiddies?  I'm getting really nervous!!
