Unknown Rash and Fever

Unknown Rash and Fever

Took Ashtyn to the doctor today because he had a pimple like rash on his face. It started this morning as 4 bumps, and now he has 7 on his face, two on his left wrist, and one on his right elbow. At the doctors his temp was 101. The doctor has no idea what the rash is so he had a 2nd doctor come in, and he too had no idea what the rash was. They told me to watch it, that they were concerned mostly about the fever, and to come back if anything changed. By the time I got home, his temp was 102.7. I gave him tylenol and it went down to 100.6. An hour later, he woke up from a short nap covered in goosebumps, shaking with a temp of 101.6. His temp is now 103.5. I am getting really worried. My mom is working right now (at the hospital) and told me to watch and make sure it is not going up or down too fast because that is what causes the seizures. I don't know what to do with him. The docs don't know what is wrong, and his fever is getting worse not better. I guess I don't really know what I am asking....but I don't know whether I should continue sponging him off or take him to the hospital.

I'd take him in....it doesn't hurt to have another assessment and maybe they can shed some light on what it is (they might have seen it recently in other kids).

Well, we just tried motrin instead of tylenol to see if that makes any difference. He is just laying in place, not moving a muscle. I hope he gets better....if not, I will take him in. Waiting to see what the Motrin does.

aubree just had that same rash... we were told it is viral and there is nothing they can do for it and it normally shows up either with a high fever or right after the high fever breaks.  but you described it exactly how aubree had it... they were red/brownish pimple like things and there were alot of them on her face and chest..

Is the fever still high? If he is listless and still has a high fever or is getting dehydrated, I'd take him in, even if the rash is viral or if it is going away...I'd do it for the sake of getting the fever down.

Maddie's got that!... she has two pimple like bumps in her left cheek, one on each elbow, and one on her leg. We thought they were mosquito bites... she also started developing a nasty fever that wouldn't go down with motrin... only went down a little with tylenol.
She also started to show red/purplish dots in her hands and feet and she had blisters in the back of her throat.

On top of that, she had pink eye again... and a nasty double ear infection! =((

There's not much they can do to help them. Now with the fever, it's kinda tricky... you don't wanna leave them like that when they have a 103 fever.... =(

Maybe take him to the ER and have him checked just in case?? that's what I'd do. Fortunately Maddie's fever went down the next day...

Hope he's feeling better!

Jillian has the rash now - had a fever from 99.7-102.8 from Friday thru Monday, then it broke and now she has the rash.  My  mom is a nurse and looked up some stuff and we think she has/had Roseola which is apparently a common thing for infants 6mo - 2 years.  Says unexplained fever with little to no other symptoms, lasting for 3-7 days, typically followed by rash on trunk and spreading to arms, legs, face lasting a few minutes to a few days.  From what we read it says by about 15 months most babies build up antibodies to fight it that will last a lifetime.  Basically they get it from some one infected but typically not showing symptoms because their bodies fight it and then once they get it they typically will not show symptoms again either.  It is viral, so nothing can be done but treat the fever and watch it so the fever doesn't spike and possibly cause seizures.

After throwing up 5 times in the middle of the night, Ashtyn's temp has went down and he appears to be getting better. He did drink a little veggie soup broth and has been drinking, so hopefully his fever does not go back up. Right now, he appears to be getting better and no more spots have developed.

Hey Vanessa- sounds like Maddie may have coxsackie.

cheyenne- glad to hear he's doing a bit better. there are some very nasty viruses going around- much more than I have ever seen this time of year. In my district, many many of the cases are "influenza A" (most likely swine flu, but they no longer send samples to the cdc for testing), but there is also a nasty virus going around that comes with a high fever. a LOT of kids are getting that too, and it's keeping them out of commission for several days.

That is what I thought it was to begin with, but the doc said that they are not bites. It looks the same today, so we will see if it starts going away soon.
