Update: breastfeeding with implants

I know last time this topic was discussed I said I'd update once I'd had my baby.
I've had my implants for two years, they are over the muscle and I have under the breast scars.
I have had absolutley no problems so far with feeding, my milk seems abundant and Blaise is now 8 days old, was 9lb 9oz at birth and when weighed today was 10lb 4oz!!

Hopefully we will be able to continue feeding happily without any issues.

That's good news!  It will be useful to have this in the archives for others who do a word search on the topic.

Right on Ruthie - I was wondering as I have implants too.  My breasts are already starting to leak some and I'm only 30 weeks.  Not sure if that means these boys will be here soon or what but it freaked me out the other day!!  :)     I will keep you posted on how my breatfeeding goes as well.

So glad Blaise is doing well - and I love that name!!

Thank you for posting this!!  I too have implants, under the muscle, so I was worried as well.

You should be able to breastfeed without problems, but any woman with implants should be seen by the hospital lactation consultant regardless.  Sometimes, though there "shouldn't" be problems, there certainly can be.

I was concerned as I leaked milk profusely during my previous pregnancies (before the implants) and with this last pregnancy- not a drop!
I spoke to the lactation consultant at the hospital and they were great, they gave me lots of information which has been really useful.

You are one of the lucky one.  Mine breast implants are under the muscle breastfeeding did not happen for me.  It works for some and not with others.  I still would encourage ladies not to get them if they plan to have more children and breastfeed.  It doesn't work with everyone.  Like peekawho said there can be problems - it can go either way.  I can tell you I was very depressed in not being able to breastfeed.

I also leaked a little to.  Please keep in mind it does not work for everyone.  All who read this please be prepared for not being able to breastfeed.  Ruthie I am so so happy for you that you can - it is such a wonderful thing :-)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I had my implants thinking I'd had my last baby and when I found out I was pregnant again I read lots on the subject- I was quite prepared that it wouldn't work out for me either, but very happy I am having such a positive experience. I agree , to anyone reading this thread: if you are thinking about implants, have your family first if you do plan to breastfeed.

That is good to hear...I know everyone is different and it depends on what surgery you recieved and how they performed it....

I myself had implants a few years after my son, 11 years old now....not thinking I was going to have another child...here I am 23 weeks pregnat.  I have had my implants for 9 years, once the baby is born, over the muscle with under breast scars.....so I was concerned as well!!  Here's hoping....
