Update on daughter whose baby had no heartbeat

My daughter had gone in at 12 weeks and they didn't hear a heartbeat so they had her have an ultrasound and they couldn't detect a heartbeat but said she looked more like 7-8 weeks along. The doctor took blood and said she would call with the results and they would go from there depending on the results. They called today and said the results of the bloodowrk were really high so she is still pregnant and the baby is growing. But she doesn't have to go back until January 29. Does that sound normal? I hate to second guess the doctor, she is a good and well respected doctor.

How stressed is your daughter about this?  Jan. 29 seems a terribly long time to wait,  considering how many questions and doubts she must have.    Can she call and ask for a sono earlier?  Not finding a heartbeat,  even if the pregnancy is only 7 weeks along is a concern.  It kind of seems  a little heartless to make her wait all this time.

Best wishes.  What I've learned from reading this board is that sometimes pregnancies that seem very doubtful turn out to be fine.

Thanks for the update.  It would be nice if they could try another vaginal ultrasound.  Jan. 29 seems like a very long wait.  I'm glad to hear her numbers are good.

Could her dates be off and her really not be that far along?  I have a friend who thought she was 11 weeks and went to the dr. to try to hear the heartbeat yesterday and found out she is 16+ weeks, so I guess it could go the other way to and your daughter not be as far as she thought.  I hope everything turns out for the best.  I would not be able to wait that long if I was her, i would be going crazy, I would ask for a earlier u/s.

I had the same problem. I was 12 weeks pregnant and I went in for my first ultrasound and they could not detect a fetal heart beat. The doctor told me that you should be able to hear it at about 6-8 weeks. If her hcg is still high then it seeems like she will be okay. my hcg dropped and it was not looking well for me. I had to have a d and c. But as i mentioned if the numbers are still high and they are not lowering then she should be fine. They may need to try a vaginal ultrasound, because sometimes it is hard to detect a heartbeat by only doing a abodominal sono. My prayers are with you.

What can they tell from the hcg? Does it show how far along she is? So if they found during the ultrasound that she is not as far along as expected does the test comfirm it? I am not sure what these thing show.
