Update on my Triple Screen Test that showed Positive

Well, some of you might know that I had a triple screen test come back positive last week. Well I had the level 2 ultrasound done yesterday and also had to go through Genetic counseling. They told me my AFP (alph-fetoprotein) was 3.74 when the cut off was 2.5. They said I had a 1 in 37 chance (really only about 3%) to have a baby with spina bifida. That kinda scared me a little.

Well we then had our ultrasound and the first things they looked at were the spine and brain. Everything looked PERFECT and normal. They said they were ruling out Spina Bifida by 99% (meaning I still have a 1% chance of having a baby with spina bifida but that seems pretty unlikely now). We were pretty relieved so I was one of the many FALSE positives out there....

We did also find out we are having a baby BOY!! We are pretty excited about that also. We both wanted to have a boy (though if it was a girl we would have been happy also) and our wish came true. The only thing we have to worry about know is my high AFP levels. It could lead to a low birth weight baby or I could go into preterm labor (Yikes!!) I will have another ultrasound at 28 to 30 weeks to make sure the baby is growing like it should.

And thank you all for your support about this. After reading a lot of you got false positive, I didn't freak out like I think I might have...

Im going in for my testing in two weeks and am so glad I read this. I would freak out at a false positive (although we all know from our reading they are so common). I am sure you are fine and will be thinking of you and your little boy:) Congrats!!

congratulations on the baby boy and the clean bill of health your story and the pictures made me tear up a little bit i wish you the best of luck with him i am sure he will be a handful.
