Update on my glucose

Update on my glucose

I saw my dr. this a.m. and asked him a lot of questions. Apparently the nurse gave me the wrong information. He sends anyone over 135 not 105 for the 3 hour test. That made me feel better about my 146. He also said it doesn't matter what I am eating it wouldn't affect the results. It's the calories, not the carbs that contribute to the condition. He said it's simply how my body breaks down the glucose and produces insulin. I'm still gonna try to watch the carbs, can't hurt. But the good thing was when I asked him his opinion on me taking the 3 hour test, he said if he had to bet on it, he'd bet I'll pass. That made me feel better. I know there is still a chance I'll fail, but he has 25 years experience with this, so if he'd bet I'd pass, that's some encouragement. I'll let you all know the results of the 3 hour test. May have the results by the end of next week.

I am glad he eased your mind a bit. I have to go for my test on Monday. The doc was upset because i should have already had it done. Darn those nurses lol.

When is your next appt?

ok i'm glad you have been eased but.....i don't see how he can say that what you have eaten wouldn't effect the results....if a diabetic can control their levels via diet then how can you say diet doesn't effect your levels??
my father is a diet controled diabetic and i myself have had hypoglycemia in the past...both of which are controlled by diet.

sorry just wanted to think outloud.

That is weird! Because I do not even have to watch my calories. Only the carbs. Carbs are what raise your blood sugar. Sugar is a carb. I could sit down and eat a whole plateful of meat and it would do nothing. But you give me 2 peices of bread and a potato and watch it fly up. I also find it strange he said it does not matter what you eat before testing. Never heard that one before. Anyhow, I hope your results are good! Good Luck! Danielle

I agree with all of you. It doesn't make sense what he said and I am watching my carbs till I take the test. I was going to eat a lean cuisine lasagna for lunch and instead went to the supermarket and bought a rotisserie chicken. I'm not taking any chances. He isn't a nutritionist, and I don't think he understands about the relationship of carbs to blood sugar, although he should! As long as he knows how to deliver babies, which he does, I'm not going to complain.

Tresa, I thought you should've had the test by now. I'm not surprised he was upset. Will that affect anything? My next appt. is on the 30th, what about you?

Nanci,
I agree! How can what you eat NOT affect the results. I even said to him that that doesn't make sense given that diet controls the diabetes, but he was adamant that it was the calories. It's bothering to get wrong info from your doc, but thank goodness I have you guys.

Though I don't have much to do with diet or 3 hour GTT's, I can tell you that carbs are NOT the enemy you might think.

Certain types of carbs (regular pasta, white rice, white bread, white potatoes, etc) can cause a spike in your blood glucose temporarily.  Try to include plenty of "healthy" carbs in your diet--whole wheat pasta (in limited amounts) whole grain bread, wild rice, and fruits and vegetables.

I know you aren't trying to protein load or anything, and I do agree that tipping the scales more towards nice lean meats and low fat cheeses and dairy is a good thing.   But carbs in and of themselves are not the enemy!

Making wise choices is the way to go, as you are doing.

Wow  very conflicting opinions I am wondering  what a difference in the doctors I sort of had to watch both, counting the carbs too eat less but more often throughout the day

I agree. I am not saying you can not eat any carbs. I have to really watch my carbs in the morning as I am really sensitive to them as many people are. I have 3 snacks a days that are allowed 30 carbs and a protein. But I am limited. And I will tell you real quick, I have played around to see what I can and can not eat. And if I eat to many carbs it goes sky high. I can not even eat the to limits they gave me or they go high. Right now my numbers are perfect but I promise you if you do have g.d. you are not going to be able to eat all the carbs you want without your blood sugar spiking. I too see a dietician. I also eat a protein after my carb snacks to even it out but I still can only eat them in moderation.

i know exactly what you mean. no more free rain on carbs and I really have to watch mine in the morning too or I am spiking and have low blood sugar by about 9am (I hate that). :o)

my snacks are 30 carbs too (half in the form of fruit or vegetables) and I've noticed that throwing a protein in with them helps (piece of low fat string cheese usually), although thats not what is on the diet that was given to me. Dietician said it was ok though.

it is interesting to learn what carbs do to your body vs. what proteins do. it sure makes you more aware of what you put in your mouth. :o)

I love the string cheese! That is usually the protein I eat with my carb snacks. They also have a low carb peanut butter that is pretty good. It is made by jiffy and only has 5 net carbs.

i see a dietician for my gestational diabetes and I don't have to watch my carbs. I'm on a diet where i have to eat 6 times aday and 3 of them are strictly carbs (fruits and crackers or toast)... i'm not sure carbs in general have much to do with it other than if you eat too many of them at once and don't have protein to balance out then your blood sugar goes all wacky. now i agree with the no sugar thing. I'm not allowed candy or soda unless my blood sugar drops really low and then those 2 things are still a last resort.

if you want to email me I'll scan in a copy of my diet so you can see it. too much stuff to type out on a forum... ***@****

here's to hoping you don't fail the 3 hour. I bet you don't. :o)

I don't know if you guys worry about this or not, but the low carb products often have artificial sweetner in them.
