Update

by Me2mommy2b, Oct 04, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, everyone.  I haven't been on for about two weeks so I hope that everyone's doing ok.  I just wanted to let everyone know that I had a baby girl on September 24th at 7:50 am!  She was three weeks early and a little small but all of her vital signs were good so the dr was not worried about her weight.  Of course as a new mother, I have questions.  First of...GAS!!  My poor baby is suffering from it and I am gassy too (sorry if TMI) so since I'm breastfeeding I might be giving it to her through my milk.  The dr. telling me to watch what I eat but I've eliminated pretty much everything from my diet and it makes no sense to starve myself.  Does anyone know of any good method (preferably natural) of getting rid of the gas?  Second question is, her umbilical cord fell off a few days ago but I've seen a few drops of dried blood (and I keep seeing it since it fell off) when I clean the area off with an alchohol swab.  I just called the pediatrician and waiting for him to call me back.  Also, she seems to be getting a diaper rash.  I've been using Aveeno diaper rash cream and it doesn't seem to help her much.  I've decided to leave her for a few hours a day without a diaper and use a cloth diaper instead so her skin breaths a little.  Is that a good idea?  Thank you all very much for your helpful advice.

Congratulations!

As for the diaper rash, use some desitin.  This always helped with my little one.

Another home remedy would be to brown some flour in the oven, then apply to infected area.

You may also want to consider the diapers she is wearing.  If the diaper isn't soaking up the fluids then the diaper isn't working properly.

One more thing...  You will be tired more than usual.  The getting up in the middle of the night and all.  This helped with me, I would sleep when he did.  Makes since....

For the gas portion for baby-I now mine was gassy if I ate Chocolate or anything with peppers.  That was what bothered him--and by no means do not starve yourself--you need the food to keep your strenght up and produce milk for baby.  You can try gs drops and see if that helps.  For the diaper rash, yes use the air method--also try and not to use baby wipes that much they can hurt the little ones.  Use a wash cloth if you can.  I also use bag balm for tough diaper rash.  It seems to work better than creams.

Air is always good for a diaper rash. My baby had gotten a really bad diaper rash, it seemed like it came out of nowhere. I was using balmex, desatin and j&j ointment. It was persisitent and never went away. The ped. told me not to use them anymore and to use baby powder w/ cornstarch (just a sprinkle when changing). It absorbed all of the moisture. 2 days later my baby's bottom was smooth. No more diaper rashes ever. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW ADDITION TO YOUR FAMILY.

Are you only breast feeding or are you supplementing with formula?  If using formula, your baby could need a different type.  There are some natural diapers out there that aren't too expensive.  My friend's baby had to use those in the beginning becuase she was allergic to some scent in the pampers.  Mylecon drops help the baby with gas.  With both the diaper rash and gas though, I'm betting she has an alergy (allergy) to something you are eating or possibly the formula (if you are using any) you may be using.

No, she's strictly on the breast for now.  I'm not using any formula.  My m-i-l tells me that she could be gassy b/c she doesn't have a strict feeding schedule.  Sometimes, she wakes up in two hours screaming for food and sometimes it takes her at least 4 hours to get hungry.  I tried putting her on a strict three hour feeding schedule but if she's not hungry, she won't take the breast and I can try and try until I'm blue in the face.  So I've decided to wait for her to wake up.

Cornstarch for the diaper rash.  It works like a dream.  I worked at a daycare and it worked better than any cream.  As for getting rid of gas try Mylanta drops or laying the baby down and working her legs up to her chest bent at the knees.  I also laid my son on a couch pillow on my lap, on his belly and rubbed his back from top to bottom and that seemed to work out some vicious toots.  Good luck!

Make sure she has a good latch on your breast and she is not sucking in to much air during breast feeding. You can try to keep her upright for 15 to 20 min. after feeding during burping to help get her food down and to help with burping. This may ease the gas. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water during feedings and after. Try to stay away from uncooked veggies. Broccoli is your worst veggie. Mylicon drops are a good for gas. You can by the generic they work just as well. How are her bowel habits?

Why would you put her on a schedule? Because of your MIL.  Did she breastfeed or is this subtle criticism?  Fulltime 100% breastfeeding is a fulltime job, roundtheclock, rewarding but still hard--it's very impressive you've undertaken it. Breast milk digests faster and more easily and therefore baby needs to eat more often. If you aren't nursing on demand (whenever baby wants, if it's 30 minutes later even) you also run the risk of jeopardizing your milk supply--it responds to how much/how often baby needs it (which is a function of how fast they're growing). Baby schedules have nothing to do with gas that I've ever heard of, honestly, and I'm an older mom. I think you're probably making more trouble for yourself this way. My kids (they're big now) get gas when their bellies are empty.

Whenever I ate anything with tomoatoes, my little one would get gas.  It was sad, I restricted myself from anything with tomatoes or tomatoe sauce, good bye pizza.  LOL

As for the diaper rash, I PROMISE you bagbalm.  Seems weird, but you can buy it in the pet section at walmart.  It comes in a green square tin.  It works really well.  Everyone should use it.  :D

It's used on cows udders so they don't get dry...  but ... my kids both used it and it works wonders.  Try it and let me know what you think alright.
