Weight gain...doc says slow down???

by jenstam, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
So I had an appt today for the first time since 18 weeks. I thought it was a long time to wait nearly 7 weeks?? Anyhow, I have gained 16 lbs. I'll be 25 weeks on Sunday and my doctor says I need to slow it down and only shoot for 1/2 lb a week for the rest of the pregnancy? I didn't think 16 lbs was too bad!? What do you think?

Your doctor would punish me!    I've gained 25 lbs at 25 weeks and I don't even know how!   I think your fine!

by jenstam, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
Geez...I left feeling fat and depressed! I asked her what she thought of the 16 lbs. I shouldn't have asked! She told me that I need to be careful because I'm in my 30's and it's a lot harder to get it off than it is when you're younger. So that was her reasoning, but I didn't expect her to say that! I was expecting her to tell me that it was a good amount. I thought it was not too much, not too little. I am HUGE though...bigger than I should be, I think. I'm 5'4" and I started off a little higher than I wanted to, at 132. Normally I'm about 128 which for me has always been an ideal weight and when I feel best. But now I'm 148 now. UGH!!!

16 lbs in 25 weeks???  I don't think that is bad at all....

I'd say you are right on track

by jenstam, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
I didn't think it was bad, either! I was pretty proud of myself. She was saying though, that a majority of our weight gain in in the 3rd trimester. That's why she said to slow it down. That's really hard to do when you're hungry all the time :\

by lfb, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
I wouldn't feel bad.  I know how you feel, though.  I hadn't gained any weight at 17 weeks with my son, so my doctor told me I needed to start trying to gain.  The next month I gain 10 pounds and he griped at me saying that was too much.  I ended up gaining 40 altogether.  It was tough to get off, but not impossible.  It didn't fall off like my friend's 24 pounds, but it did come off without much efffort after 6 months.  I am worried this time, too.  I started off at 160.  I am 5'7" and like to be under 150.  I am now up to 171.  That is way to high.  I have never seen that weight on my scales.  I am worried that if I gain as much as the first time I will be 200 pounds.  How depressing!  I won't even tell anyone.  Did she give you any suggestions on how to slow the weight gain down?  I feel like I am hungry all the time and I don't want to starve the baby, so I eat when I feel hungry.

They say you should gain 25-35 pounds during your entire pregnancy if you start out at an average weight and are carrying only one child. I am 28 weeks and have gained 19-20 pounds and am "on target" according to my doctor. I was a little slow at gaining in the beginning (6 pounds the first four months) and then gained 7.5 pounds and six pounds the next two months. Don't stress out about it ... try to drink water or juice (100% fruit juice - the lower sugar the better), eat lots of fruits and lots of veggies cutting back a bit on the carbs and white sugars. Good luck!

i think you are all doing great!! jenshim why did your dr not schedule you at 4 weeks? was it them that waited till 7? id be pissed. there are some drs that bit@h about weight for reasons of losing it after rather than what is good for the baby. yes it can be harder for some, and after a certain age it can be really tough. but how can you tell a pg woman that and not hurt her feelings? lol. i am 7 weeks and i go up and down a few pounds, i think its due more to bloating. so i can say i have maybe gained 2 pounds. im trying my hardest. i am eating so much better , drinking tons more water, and laying off fast food and crud like that. i think its water, plus my boobs are hugemongous!!!! i started out overweight. not the slim chick i used to be lol. so i want to do very well at gaining a small amount. i guess ill talk to my dr about how to do that , right now i am feeing so sick. sometimes i cant eat, and other times i have to snack or i feel worse. i did have one cookie today, but it was ONE!! i dont like sweets too much normally, but i am craving a stupid apple fritter and cup of coffee!! my sis says it must be a girl. lol

16 lbs at 25 wks seems reasonable to me.  I wouldn't worry.

by Hulahut, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
OK, if it makes you feel any better, I'm 35 years old, I've gained 35 pounds, and I'm only 31w4d pg, and from what I understand the BIG weight gain is from now until I deliver.  My OB is not at all concerned, says it's totally normal and completely different from one person to the next.  I started out at 113lbs, and it's completely possible that I'll gain 50 pounds ttl by the time it's said and done.  And that malarky about making it harder to lose if you're in your 30s is ridiculous.  If you want to lose it, and you try, you'll lose it.  South Beach is a great diet, and I fully intend on doing that to start.  How lame of them to upset you like that!!  You will be fine, and don't fret.  Those of us who gain and are healthy (no gd, no bp issues, etc...) are perfectly fine.  Sheesh.  That bugs me... :)

I started off gaining slow. At 18 weeks I had only gained 7 lbs, which was the last time I had an appt. I thought it was kind of strange that they had me wait nearly 7 weeks for my next appt, also but didn't question it because I figure they know what they're doing. Now I go back in 4 weeks when I'm close to 29 weeks and then it will be every 2 weeks. I can't believe I'm almost there!! She didn't really suggest what I should eat though. I told her I eat lots of apples and don't eat all that unhealthy. She said if I eat an apple I should eat some cheese with it to make it stick longer. Also eat more complex carbs instead of simple carbs. I just hate the thought of watching my diet during pregnancy but if I don't want to gain too much I guess I'm going to have to.

I got you all  - at 32w2d I at 47pounds ha tell your dr that one.  16p only 25w- that equals out to .64pounds a week. Take that times it by the remaining weeks that is only 9.6 more pounds - a total of 25.6pounds.  Even if you put on a pound a week that would be 31pounds total - still not to much - yr dr crazy :-)  My dr is not concerned either with my weight.  I started out at 137 and 5' 5.  Now I am at 184.  Gained 60pounds with first child, lost it in three months, 25pounds with second, lost that in 1 week.

Thank you for that breakdown!! It doesn't look bad when you put it that way (: I think I will probably gain about 15 more or so, but that is 31 lbs. I think that should be okay! I was told in the beginning of this pregnancy that I should be between 25-35 lbs. So I will be at the higher end of that. I don't know what she was thinking...

by kris123, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
Makes you feel better doesn't it.  Good that was what I was trying to do.  I average about 1.46pounds a week - for the last three months it has been 7pounds total.  Crazy - I got bigger every where where I didn't want to.  My butt, legs, nasty old little love handles - this baby better be big and he better breastfeed a lot cause I'm counting on that to help me lose.  My sis gained 57pounds and lost 44pounds in 6weeks and only breastfeed.  As soon as I am able I'll be running again.

I plan on getting one of those running strollers but in MN it starts to get pretty cold in Oct/Nov so I won't have a lot of time to run in the winter. I will probably be doing lots of working out next spring if I haven't lost it all by then. I'm bigger everywhere, too but my boobs are just HUGE. I hate them!!

by lynne1276, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
I'm eating ice cream as we speak....just thought you all would like to know.  hmmm and I wonder where the weight came from.  Oh well, I'll loose it later!

by jenstam, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
Yeah? Well I went with coworkers to a BUFFET for lunch! After my appt. Then I felt really guilty! It was good though (:

by sallystar, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
i have never eaten so much in my whole life.  i am wondering why i have not gained more weight?  does being pregnant burn a lot of calories?  i'm 21w and have gained 6lbs total.  i eat NONstop...

by Mozartcowgirl, May 03, 2007 12:00AM

How about that ice cream in the middle of the night - that's the best and fills me up - that's why my butt is big - no wait it could be from something else I ate :-)

lol....I know...at the beggining I ate ice cream for every meal because it was the only thing I could keep down!   Life is good  :)

by STEPHANIE5, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
I gained 65+ pounds which each of my boys during each pregnancy. Dr. never said one word, as long as my BP was okay.I have hung on to about 15 extra pounds after all 3 pregnacies, but I dont excercise and could loose if I wanted too.I think each Dr is different.I am considered chubby now, 155 lbs. But what the heck, I love to eat!

Eat away!!

by BusyMom92960206, May 03, 2007 12:00AM
it isn't bad, but just remember the more you gain, the more you have to loose.  I didn't have anyone get on my case with my first pregnancy and I gained over 100 lbs, I was 18 when I gave birth too her, she is fixing to be 15 and I haven't lost it yet, matter of fact since I got married and had the other kids some how another 60 lbs found me....LOL

Anyway, you should only gain 25-35 lbs the entire pregnancy to go back to pre-pregnancy weight, but of course Breastfeeding will help you loose weight faster too at postpartum.  I am 33w3d and have gained 12 lbs thus far, but I am a bigger girl to begin with sooo....each person is different.

I would not worry about it to much, as long as you feel ok, your sugar is ok and the little one is growing right on track, keep doing what you are doing.

Best of luck to you!

hahahahhahaha Your doctor would love me! I just left mine who was all annoyed because I've only gained 5 pounds at 23 weeks. He told me to eat more! LOL I eat every half hour...what more does he want?? I could quit my job and become a full time eater! I think 16 pounds is fine......and I'm sure my doc would be proud of you! :)
