Wellbutrin

by imready, Jan 02, 2004 12:00AM
Hi ~  I was wondering if anyone else is on anti depressants and what their experience has been like.  I am 4 months along and I have been taking Prozac yet when the doctor told me it was a category C I wanted to know what else is available and he switched me to wellbutrin.  I am beginning to worry and hoping some one else is experiencing the same thing...
Thanks!  Happy New Year!

I found some info on wellbutrin, which is a class B pregnancy drug, which means: "NO EVIDENCE OF RISK IN HUMANS. Adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women have not shown increased risk of fetal abnormalities despite adverse findings in animals, or, in the absence of adequate human studies, animal studies show no fetal risk. The chance of fetal harm is remote, but remains a possibility."

and this on Prozac
(which, as your doctor said, is a pregnancy class C drug)
RISK CANNOT BE RULED OUT. Adequate,well-controlled human studies are lacking, and animal studies have shown a risk to the fetus or are lacking as well. There is a chance of fetal harm if the drug is administered during pregnancy; but the potential benefits may outweigh the potential risks.

here is a good link on drugs during pregnancy:

you have to find out the generic name of the drug you are taking first, though.

Don't let this scare you if you have been on Prozac.  The chance of any harm is quite slim, in any event.

Hi there,

I was on welbutrin but switched to prozac because the welbutrin was making me nuts. :)  Prozac is the only thing that works for me, and unmedicated I am a mess.  I've tried to reduce the dose from 60mgs to 40, but began suffering for it.  I told my ob and she said that was fine - at least I tried.

I don't have run of the mill depression, but rather panic disorder/depression and that is why the welbutrin didn't help me.  You may be just fine on it, but I guess I just don't want you to worry too much if you need to go back to the prozac.  I just know I would be a stressed out pregnant lady and a stressed out mom if I wasn't medicated properly, and that CAN'T be good for the baby!

At 22 weeks our little girl is a model of health.  Best of luck to you and let us know how you are doing!
