What do you think of this?

What do you think of this?

At the mall today, my daughters and I were in a Claires store. (sells costume jewelry) A lady came in with a tiny baby boy in a carrier, and he had one ear pierced!! My daughter said to the lady, "Oh your baby is cute" SO then I said, "How old is he" and he was 6 weeks old!!!!

Just wondering if anyone thinks this is weird or if I'm just out of it?? lol

OMG :(

That is just plain weird...there is no way I would get my baby's ears pierced that early...they won't even do it where I live until the baby is at least 2 months old, and even then, a lot of places won't do it.

And why would you get a little boy's ear pierced anyway???

I think it's madness for her to do that and she is breaking him into something she might regret later. Anyway i hope she will shake up and realise what she did.

Wow, yeah.. that is really stupid.

How old was the mother? Was she a teen mom?

She looked to be in her early twenties, I would guess. It just looked so WEIRD--silly even. This TINY newborn BOY with one ear pierced. I was wondering if its a new "thing" to have a baby boys ear pierced. Jameson will definitely NOT be joining this fad. LOL

It's one thing if a mom or dad want to do these type of things to themselves but it's another when they do it to the kids. It is what may be a big mistake that they wont understand until the future. A mohawk is a forgivable fad because it'll grow back really soon, but a piercing sometimes doesnt close, and sometimes what we do to our kids reflects badly on us wheather we mean to or not. We already prejudged this woman as someone young because something like this would be done by someone immuture in age who thought it looked cool. its sad really.

All I have to say is EEEEWWWWW, would never ever do that to my son unless he really really wanted one...and he would have to at least be in highschool.  I thought that was a early 90's fad anyways!!

I had a friend/neighbor that pierced her 3 year old boys ear. I thought it was kind of strange too. She just shrugged and said he wanted it. I wondered how many 3 year old boys know what they want! She had many piercings and tattoos herself though so I think she just liked it. She was actually a really nice person though. To each his own, I guess!

Yeah, my 3 year old wanting a mohawk is very different from something permanent (the hole often does not close completely) My husband had his ear pierced when he was a pre-teen and he STILL regrets it as the hole is still visible.

Of course I have my own opinion on piercing any baby's ears.

I would NEVER pierce Noah's ear whether he's a newborn or an older child.  That's terrible to do to a baby.  I bet that baby cried buckets when this was done to him - poor thing.

i personally wouldn't pierce any infant's ears- boy or girl. just like that little boy may grow up and hate it, a little girl may do the same. fortunately, I have not seen any infant boys with pierced ears yet. i always have to remind myself to be cautious when the topic comes up in conversation, especially with people who did or are planning on piercing their baby's ears. i have to simply say i chose not pierce hers, since  i think it is cruel and imposing our fashion on a baby i don't want to sound high and mighty (not so cautious online, i guess!). anyways, a little girl in my class got her ears pierced recently after her fifth birthday because she wanted it desperately. she came in so proud! those whose ears are pierced already either don't notice or say anything about it or are stressing because they lost their earrings. i think doing it when they're older helps them appreciate it more too.

We had a long discussion on this issue a couple of months ago.  It got heated.

I remember that, Peek. But this is a 6 week old BOY we are talking about. That discussion was about piercing little girls ears.

I see no difference at all.

Men have their ears pierced every day.  I think that parents could use the same tired argument ("better to do it when they won't remember the pain") to justify altering a male childs appearance.

We alter male infants' appearances every day at birth, without the consent of the child involved.

*shrugs shoulders*

Not starting a fight.  But if its ok for girls ears, there should be no difference for boys ears.   I don't think its ok to pierce infant girls ears.

that's stupid...my dad jokes about getting Cameron's ear pierced because he has one done...it doesnt bother me girl or boy BUT a baby at 6 weeks...thats just insane...My friend works at a jewlery store and if you buy the earings the piercing is free and they said they had a baby boy about 2 months old go in with his mom.. which was about 35-40 and she got these bling diamond earings on her son.. not the typical they pierce with.. she MADE the girls there pierce her son's little ears and has BIG diamonds.. they are as big as his ears my friend was saying.. the earings themselves cost over 1grand...go figure.. some people..

Yeah, I remember when I got my son's ears pierced because so many people were saying "Oh, SHE'S so cute!". I figured I may as well make him LOOK like a girl.
Just kidding. :-) I think this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard! My first thought was that people would come up to the baby and see him with his face turned to the side and see the earring and automatically assume he's a girl.

I had this problem sometimes when my son was dressed in all in BLUE...I can't even imagine how bad it would be if he had an ear pierced. Again, I think this is something that a person should decide for themselves when they are old enough to make the decision.
My biggest fear is that it would get infected, or God forbid the thing get yanked on by another toddler when he gets old enough to start interacting with other kids. Too many things to worry about...not worth it at all. Plus, I just think guys don't need earrings...but that's my personal opinion. I guess I'm old fashioned.

I got you one better... I got so sick of it with my first ("what a beautiful little girl!") that I actually dressed him head to toe in items that said " I'm a boy!" and people STILL would ask.
