What kind of breast pump do you have?

by brentlie, Apr 12, 2007 12:00AM
Just wondering what a good breast pump is to get.  With 1st DD I only had a avent hand pump and I could never get anything to come out when I tried it.  This time I want to only pump.  Did any of you girls pump and supplement?  I had a hard time last time and didnt want to try at all this time but I am going to give it a try and pump some and give her formula some.  Did anyone have problems doing this?  Did any of you rent your breast pump instead of buying one?  THis will be my last child so I hate to spend 300.00 on a good pump and only use it once.  Also, what do I need to do to prepare my nipples for breast feeding.  I appreciate any help I can get on this subject from you girls!!!

I purchased a medela pump and loved it!  I got it from Target, but I know you can rent these from the hospitals and other sources as well.  I thought about renting, but instead went ahead and purchased it to use with my first DD and now I am planning for the second and I know I want to try again.  The first time around I gave DD breastmilk and supplemented her too.  This worked best for me, b/c I didn't produce a lot of breastmilk and it seemed like she was always feeding and just couldn't get enough. It worked out fine with her and I even used a paci too.  Some people say that you shouldn't mix the bottle with the breast and a paci, but mine didn't care either way as long as she was getting her food...lol!
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

Thanks!  That helped I was worried about doing formula and breast milk and nipple confusion.  It makes me feel better that it worked good for you.  I didn't have much milk with DD eather and she had to feed every 2 hours to get enough and then my nipples busted open from her feeding so much.  I think exclusivly pumping will be a better option for me this time.

Hey, I got a Medela Pump in Style and can't live without it!  If you plan on BF for a while, it's worth the investment.  It only takes less than 15 mins for me to get at least 6oz per session.  Of course, it takes practice but you can do it!
Good luck!

I was used to not wearing a bra around the house and I had no problem what so ever with exclusive breast feeding.  I guess mine had toughen up.

I agree, I also bought the Medela Pump in Style from the hospital....
I have gotten my money's worth out of it!  It works amazing!

I started with a $40 evenflo with baby #1. What a piece of junk. Unless you're engorged, you won't get much out of it. Then I bought the Medela Pump in Style. I got it on ebay for under $100 with shipping. It works great.

I also bought a medela pump in style off of Ebay, brand new for $125, worked great, not hard to use and didnt hurt my nipples at all!

I can't remember which pump it was but I just rented from the hospital for a couple months and it was great!  It wasn't very expensive either.

I also got a Medella pump, just a hand pump though..It was great for me, because I was a stay at home mom, and only needed it a few times when I went out..I saw no need, being at home, to buy a more expensive electric pump, so this worked great for me and I flowed easily too. I would definately recommend any Medella product, I know now that you can but them at Target too..I may try the electric one with this upcoming baby...

I've always heard you shouldn't do anything to prepare your nipples. there might be an exception if you have flat inverted nipples though. i didnīt know I did.
i have the medela harmony. wish i had the pump in style, but only cuz iīm going back to work soon and i feel insecure about my milk supply. the harmony is great so far- I seem to be able to empty my breasts well enough with it, and it's easy to clean, not alot of parts.
you can try renting a hospital pump if you dont want to invest, but if you plan on nursing for a year, it's probably more expensive.
