What to do about heartburn...

by lovethebops, Jul 18, 2007 02:43PM
I am starting to get really bad heartburn now, just as I did when pregnant w/ my daughter...I have taken tums, but it really does nothing for it. I know there isn't much else you can take, and it impossible for me to avoid all the foods that give me heartburn (namely, EVERYTHING!!)..When I had this w/ dd, it did not go away until the day I gave birth. I sat up after and it was like an instant relief! HAs anyone else suffered w/ BAD heartburn on a daily basis and found something to relieve it?...I don't know what else to do about it, I actually lost sleep last night because it was so bad. Thanks for your thoughts or suggestions~bops

Sorry to hear you're going through this.  I had BAAAD heartburn throughout my pregnancy.  Drinking water would burn me that's how bad it was.  The only thing I took was TUMS.  It wasn't the greatest but it did help somewhat.  Sleeping elevated might help.  All those things that people suggested actually made it worse (drinking milk, eating bananas, etc).  Good luck

I haven't had it yet, cross my fingers!  But, I have several friends who have and say that drinking a little baking soda with warm water did wonders!  Good Luck!

I always have bad heartburn when I am pregnant. I havent found anything yet that works. TUMS are OK, but like someone else said, they only work for a few minutes and then heartburn is back. I get it no matter what i eat. I had some grapes the other night as a midnight snack and shortly thereafter the heartburn started. I may have to try that baking soda mixture and see what happens.

My doctor told me that I could take Pepcid AC for heartburn- one in the morning and one in the evening- because I have been getting it just something terrible too!  I thought always having something in my tummy would help, but it doesn't for me, and Tums only work for 3 minutes or so and then its back.  Good luck!

Thanks all- I get heartburn drinking water! I drank some vanilla soy milk last night, thinking it might help w/ all the acid, but I think it actually made it worse! Tums are the same for me, good for only a few minutes, and then back again. I am not looking forward to the next few months...W/ dd, the heartburn was persistent until the end of the pregnancy. I will try the baking soda drink though, worth a try!

I've been taking Mylanta - I had chronic heartburn before I got pregnant and it's only gotten worse.  It used to be that Zantac was the only thing that worked but I can no longer take that.  It takes 4 Mylanta at once, but they said that was fine.  Hope that helps.

I just called my doc about this today because it is getting SO bad! I didnt' have any problems at all til the beginning of the 3rd trimester and it just keeps getting worse. Tums just will not cut it anymore! Sooo the nurse told me I could take Zantac, Prilosec OTC, maalox, mylanta or more tums. She said if it didn't stop by my nest appt on the 31st to let them know and the'd prescribe me something.

Ginger snaps (the hard kind with a lot of ginger) worked wonders for me, and my heartburn was so bad it would wake me up at night.  Liquid Mylanta came in second in effectiveness.  Tablets of any kind (Tums etc.) were almost useless, but the liquid Mylanta did work.
