When did you pierce your daughter's ears?

When did you pierce your daughter's ears?

Okay Girls, My baby girl is 2 months and she has her 1st set of shots. The place where I want to take her says thats all she needs is the first set to get her ears pierced. My mom did mine when I was two months, Im going to get really small diamond ones that are hypoallegeric. Me and my sister are taking our daughters, because when my sister did her daughters she didnt get hypoallegeric just sterling sliver and she has senstive skin so she has to redue them.
When did you ladies pierce your baby's ears? just want to get some info on it. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

I'm waiting until Aspen decides if she wants her ears pierced. I know some girls who got their ears pierced at infancy and hate them. I also heard it is much more likely for them to be crooked. Happy Mothers Day! :)

I've neevr had a girl. I have two and 1/2 boys but I have friends with girls. My sister in law and one of my friends got their daughters ears pierced really early like a month old or something. I have another friend who says she hates the idea of it until her daughter's older. If I did have a girl I would wait because babies sometimes tend to pull at their ears, especially if they get an ear infection and I wouldn't want my baby to rip her ear. I have a friend who has a slit going all the way through her ear from where her piercing was because it got pulled on. There's like a little triangle cut out of her ear is what it looks like. Also, Happy Mother's Day to you too.

My mom said we (her five daughters) could wait until we were old enough to make an informed decision, but could not do it younger than 12.  All of my sisters now have pierced ears, but we all did it on our own timelines, the youngest was maybe 15 years old and the oldest did it at 21.  Then my mom pierced hers at 45!  LOL

i am waiting until she is old enough to want it.
A frequent poster recently described an incident where she found the earring loose in the pack n play with her infant.
The daycare i worked at used to prohibit earrings and other jewlery because it is a choking hazard and can dangerous.
My sister's were done as an infant and had to be redone.
Mine were pierced as an infant, and i hate to wear earrings. I personally feel that piercing a baby's ear so that she looks "cute" is a bit selfish and more of the mom's issue. I don't resent my mom for doing it- i just personally don't feel it's necessary for a baby.

I do have to agree with tiredbuthappy. I know I would hate myself forever if I woke up and realized my baby choked on an earing. Also, what if she grows up and hates them? My dad insisted I get my ears pierced when I was like eight and really do not like wearing them. I'm allergic to jewelry too. My ears swell up and get all ***** and red with bumps. I can't even where the hypo-alergenic ones. You should also maybe wait until she's older just incase she's allergic to metal.

we got aubree's done at 6 months.. her ped. told us to wait until at least then.. that way theres a better chance the holes would be even... and the place we got them done at told us they do not like to do any babies under 6 months... they did both ears at once and aubree cried for like a minute then she was done.. i do not regret my decision.. i absolutely love them :) now when she gets older if she doesn't like them she can take them out.

This is sort of interesting.  Someone asked a similar question a month or so ago and I gave my two cents on the subject.  What's funny is that I was the only person (out of quite a few) to respond saying I think it's best to wait until they are old enough to make their own decision about whether they even want earrings (and also be old enough and mature enough to clean the earrings).  I really opened up this post expecting to see the same thing (and I was going to keep my 2 cents to myself this time), but it's interesting to see that I'm not, in fact, the only woman left on the planet who thinks it's not a bad idea to wait until they're a little older.  (I'm going to add my little disclaimer: this is my opinion, and I do not believe that the parents who get their daughter's ears pierced at a young age are evil or wrong... I just won't be doing it with my munchkin).  =)

(I stand corrected... in that post a month or so ago, there was in fact ONE other person who shared similar views with me on the subject).  =)  I had to check... I was curious.

Those responses were on a different forum, right?  Just shows the different populations that the forums attract (even though there is plenty of crossover).  :)  A.

I'll throw my two cents in:  I've never understood the piercing of the ears in babies.  I think it's unnecessary thing to put a little baby girl through & since you hate to see her in pain, maybe it would be wise to rethink it?

I agree w/tired and annie - there's a hazard if the baby happens to pull out the earring.  There are so many ways a child can accidentally hurt herself/himself - why put one more there that's unnecessary?

I personally think ear piercing should be done at the age where a girl can take care of her ears herself.  It's a coming of age thing in a way - my girls got their ears pierced at 13.  None of their ears got infected so that was good.  Also, there are so many things that goes into taking care of babies - why add one more thing?

I hope I don't sound too blunt - of course it's your decision, New Mommy, but since you asked, I thought I'd answer w/the others - jen

i've also noticed that another forum has an entirely different population at times :) Maybe that's why I gravitate more to this one... i seem to share views more with many on this forum.

I was told I had to wait until dd was 1 by her ped - when she turned one I did it and I did everything RIGHT.  I cleaned them and turned them every night for 4 months - then changed them into the diamonds (you have to keep the original ones in for 4 months).  Well one fell out when she was swimming and even though I noticed it right away my attemps at putting another one in were too late - the hole started to close that quick and guess what - it got infected.  When I tell you I did everything right - I mean it I was so upset - I took the other one out and let both close and I will not do it again until she is old enough to ask.  My advice would be to wait - although it does not hurt them much getting it done.

AnnieBrooke... good point!  Ever since my daughter was born I've been frequenting this forum the most, but I still visit with the other ones on occassion (on the off-chance that I have some helpful advice to give, or at the very least some supportive words to offer).  That's interesting.  =)

No. Not everyone likes having their ears pierced.  I had mine done at 15.  I hated wearing ear rings.    I would never pierce an infants.

we are waiting until Jillian asks for it herself.  That is what I did - at age 4 - and my mom took me then.  I jumped out of the seat after 1 ear, but she made me go back for the other because it was what I asked for.  I'm quite happy with things this way and feel like I should also wait and let Jillian decide for herself if and when she wants her ears pierced.

I have pierced babies ears and see no problems with it.  If I have a girl i will do the same thing  HOWEVER... hypoallergenic is not enough for a baby.  It has to be 14k.  and the little diamonds are not good because they can imbed in the ear.  I think you are talking about the 2mm ones.  although they are the ones that will look the best, they are not the best for her.  for babies you need to get at least 3mm.  they sleep on them so much that they will push inside the ear and the hole can heal over top of the earring requiring a small cut at the drs office to get the earring out.  My suggestion is sto start with a bigger ball or stone in 14k and once completely healed 6mo to 1yr go to the smaller diamond.  also...get the solution they sell!!!!!!

Regarding kbutcher's comment -- in fact, the tiny gold hoops I wear pretty much most of the time are earrings made for babies.  They have high gold content (I think it's 18k) so more of the pure gold and less of the alloy is present.

I would wait. There are plenty of problems, as outlined by other members.  There are plenty of other, less permanent, ways to make your baby look "cute."
