When to not swaddle

When to not swaddle

I have an 11 week old who will only sleep through the night when swaddled.  He is growing out of his swaddle that works the best and now I am trying out a new one that is too big and he escapes out of it.  He usually goes to bed at 8:30 and wakes 4-5am to feed, when he ecsapes he will wake up at 1-2am and then again at 5am and he is ready to get up by then.  My question is should I try to get him out of the habit of being swaddled or just try to find a swaddle that works and hope that he will grow out of needing to be wrapped tightly?  How long do all you moms swaddle?

My son is 7 1/2 weeks old and we stopped swaddling him about 3 weeks ago.  He sleeps just fine, but every baby is different. We just tightly tuck a blanket around him when we lay him down for the night. It worked just as well! Good luck! I hope you find a way that works for you!

My two daughters were both done with swaddling by the time we got home after they were born. Literally, the night they were home from the hospital. So every little one is different. You could try what romme said and just swaddle with a big blanket!

My son hated to be swaddled.  Everytime we tried to do it he would wiggle his way out of the blanket.  Try buying a halo sack and I believe it comes with extra pieces to swaddle.

You could try a sleep sack-it is a zip up blanket with arm holes. My daughter is 10 months old and we still use it. They sell them at BabiesRUs. Good luck to you!

I have to swaddle both of mine still as well - one with his arms out and one with his arms in.  I wish they'd sleep without it, but if that's the way I can get 2-3 hours sleep at once - I'm for swaddling.  If anybody has any hints on how to get them to sleep a little better, fill me in.  Oh - and they are just under 6 weeks old.

something i found helped alot was you know how babies often fall asleep on us etc...? we throw off alot of heat and they absorb it...anyways my mom got me this little puppy and it has a water bottle in it..and before i put ds to bed i put hot water and put it under his covers so when i put him his bed he goes from warm to warm...you know??? i found that helped alot...hope it helps..

try using a recieving blanket like they use in the hospital.

My Jacob is 3wks today and he is off and on with the swaddling.  Typically he doesn't like it, but if he gets over tired sometimes it helps.

good luck to you.

Thanks for the responses.  When we brought him hom from the hospital, we would leave one arm out at night.  Then we watched that happy baby DVD and they promote swaddling, so we swaddled him really tight that night...well he slept better and wasnt moving around as much, I guess cause he couldnt lol!  I think once I move him to his room I will try one arm out again, then transition to both out.  I would swaddle him forever if I knew they made a blanket big enough for a 10 yr old, haha, but they dont.  So I think I should try to do it earlier so I dont run into problems of him being use to it.  I wish he liked a pacifer or his thumb, but he isnt too much of a sucker, so he hasnt found a way to self sooth yet.
