Worried about HCG levels, please help

by WilliamsMom, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I am in my 3rd pregnancy, 1st was my 2 1/2 year old, 2nd was a miscarriage in December. I am 4 weeks pregnant, I had my HCG levels and they were 408 and then 783, I thought that was good and my MD said it was within normal ranges, but then on my lab request I got today to bring to work (I work at a hospital), it says dx: threatened abortion.....what the heck does that mean? She is not working today so I don't really trust any of the other people in that office, what should I do? I know I shouldn't worry, but does anyone know if that is just a term they use because I am technically in a complicated pregnancy because of the recent pregnancy, or is there somehting wrong with this pregnancy too? I got my blood done today, I am still waiting for results. Please anyone let me know if you have any advise. Thank you!

well I know that your levels are suppossed to double so maybe he put that since you level didnt double. not sure Good luck

by anxioustobeamom, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
maybe your MD wrote that b/c of your history, but also maybe he wrote it for a reason to have all this blood work b/c they have to bill the insurance company for something. i pray that all is well with you.

by cutiemama, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I think it has to do with the fact that your levels didn't exactly double. Were they taken exactly 48 hours apart because that could make a huge difference. Keep us posted and good luck.

by Bellexy, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I can tell you....they put that on my HCG levels cause that is the only way that Insurance Companies will cover each one!  I have a history of 3 m/c...so it is very important to have mine done every few days in the beginning...they put that on all of mine!

Also, as an fyi, hcg only need to increase 66%.  They say double because it easier to calculate in your head.  You met that 66% increase.

As for the threatened abortion, I don't know why they put that.

I hope your pregnancy goes very well for you.

by AndiJ78, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I agree, they most likely put that to get approval. The term "missed abortion" or "threatened abortion" are terms that are synonymous w/ miscarriage. As others have said, that is how they justify ordering more tests. When I had my 3rd loss, they put "missed abortion" on the d/c orders from the hospital where I found out. It drove me mad having that term on the paperwork, but that is what they use.

Hi, I posted at my original site, but I guess most people don't go back and read week old messages:)
My 3rd level only increased 20%. I went in for another u/s at the hospital with better equipt and an actual u/s tech to do the test, with a OB doc sitting in to eval...baby didn't not grow much since the previous u/s, it appeared only about 1/2 week older and it had been 9 days, and...no sign of cardiac activity. Having a d/c tommorrow. Try, try, and try again I guess.
Thanks for your concern.

You can't tell with one number. HCG is completely subjective. They are concerned about the rise. See other postings...we have been talking alot about this the past week! Good luck to you

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. It's just horrible. Do you have any other children? My prayers are with you and just know that you're not alone here. I had a d&c this past november and I am 7w1d so it will happen again for you. Wishing you a speedy recovery and I'm blowing lots of baby dust your way**********

A previous poster said that the doctor puts that on the form because that is what needs to be listed for the insurance companies to pay.  They also list it as that if you are cramping or having spotting.  My dr. listed it on my pregnancy form for my DD, and everything turned out just fine.  I really think it is the insurance thing--that is what it was for me.

Your numbers sound great!!  Congrats!!

I know this isnt an open forum but I was hoping someone could give me alittle advice.

February 1st I went into my DRs because I wasnt feeling my baby move. I was about 24 weeks along. When I went in they didnt hear a heartbeat so then they did a U/S. My baby had died.
February 2nd I went in and they induced labor. He was delivered 12 hours and 18 minutes later. When he was born he had NO amniotic fluid and the nurse said the he looked further along then 24 weeks. Last week when I finally went in to talk to the doctor he told me that the baby had signs of infection, my placenta looked older and once again it seemed that a big reason for his death was no amniotic fluid. He said the most likely reason for low a/f was there was a tear in my sac... which I never felt anything "abnormal" in my discharge or feel any leaking. The baby however had his kidneys and looked like he was working fine at the U/S 2 weeks before although the DR did mention then that he had low a/f. I am looking for some advise and see if anyone else has gone through this and if they came up with any "hard facts" on what happened. I also am looking for support because its very hard to fall so in love with someone and be at his funeral before you ever even knew him. Thank you so much for reading this!

I just wanted to let you all know, wednesday at 3PM it was 783, today (friday) at 9AM, not even the full 48 hours it was 1752, so I have nothing to worry about it, right? Thank you all.

WoW! You are right on track with those numbers. I am quite sure the diagnosis was labeled because your last preg ended in m/c and usually it is the only way insurance will pay for an HCG level drawn before 12 weeks. Congrats, hope all continues to go well.

Your hcg sounds awesome! Great news. You can breathe a sigh of relief now!

Luv4aila, did you get your hcg results back yet? How are things going?

Sorry to butt in but I got my bfp today and my hcg result came back at 186, is that too low?  I think I am about 4 weeks preggo, counting LMP as 2-8.
Thanks!

How many dpo are you? Here's a good site that lists hcg level ranges:

Your levels sounds great. Mine were 54 at 10 dpo.

I am so sorry for what you have had to go through.

When I was pregnant with my son, I found out at 37 weeks that the amniotic fluid was low.  He was also frank breech, so they did an emergency c-section right away.

I do not understand why, if they knew 2 weeks prior, they would not have done anything about the low a/f.  I know I have heard of them supplementing the fluid to sustain the baby.  You said the kidney's were functioning properly, so that was not the cause.  A congenital heart defect can also cause low amniotic fluid.  Otherwise, you may have been leaking and just did not know it.  That was the case for me, I had no idea.  I feel as if your dr. should have done more.

I am so sorry for your loss, and I wish I could give you more conselation.  I will keep you in my prayers.

God bless,

Amanda

Hi Everyone

The only reason i actually realised i was pregnant was because i was due to get my period and realised that i had been bleeding for 10 days with no sign of ceasing. My GP then took my  blood and it registered a low HCG level of 26. This was a month ago. I have since been subjected to 8 blood tests and 2 ultrasounds as my HCG has not dropped but hasnt increased. They have told me i had a early missed abortion. I am now dure to have a D&C on Wednesday and am unsure whether i am doing the "right thing" i was hoping a month would have been sufficient to let things happen naturally but maybe it take awhile. I am desperate for life to go back to normal. The emotional stress is wearing. I hope this helps all you women with very low HCG level and a non viable pregnancy.

Thanks for reading.

So sorry to hear of your situation, last september I had an early miscarriage, the bleeding lasted around ten days and I felt that everything had come out on its own and naturally, I was wrong to make that assumption, I was very lucky that I did not get any infection.
If they have suggested a DnC then its important to have it, just to make sure everything has come away as it should.
Once this has been done you can start to getback to normal hunny.
I have now had several BFP and I am waiting for confirmation of pregnancy, I have a teenage daughter and one fallopian tube, so dont worry, if I can get pregnant again then so can you.
I know it is a horrible time for you, but look on the positive, you now know you can get pregnant, and once you have been to hospital you can start afresh.
Hugs to you

Hi everyone- i'm soory to hear what everyone else has been going through. I went in thursday for my 2nd U/S and they couldn't find the baby. I was at 7 weeks. I went back in Friday, and they found it in my left tube. the good news is it was very tiny, like the size of a 4 week embryo, so i got a shot of methotrexate which should stop any growth, and let my body reabsorb the pregnancy. As sad as this sounds, i am thankful my one tube was spared. I had an ectopic in 98, and the right tube ruptured. So, after this is out of my system, and my hcg returns to 0, we go for a dye test to make sure there is no blockage in the tube, and we try try again.

so sorry to hear about your loss. I just went through a D&C last Fri. It seems like every day I feel a little better & I know that our baby will always be a part of us. It is a hard thing to go through but it is nice to know that other women are sharing in the same thing you are. People can say they are sorry & feel bad for for you but it is so nice to chat with others who have gone through it. I hope you have a speedy recovery & my thoughts are with you!!!

With the inital low HCG level of 11 though did it continue to double thereafter and did she have any bleeding?

by duehring, Mar 11, 2006 12:00AM
To: dollchina
My sister had her hcg ran at 13 days after ovulation which is about 4 weeks and the number was just 11. She had a healthy baby boy.

by duehring, Mar 12, 2006 12:00AM
She did not have any bleeding. She did have several times the hcg  didn't double and would only go up like 3/4 of what it should. I was sure she was going to miscarry but she didn't.

by bigmommy, Mar 12, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, On Wednesday March 8th, I went to my Doctors for my first ultrasound.  I was suppose to be 7 weeks 3 days.  When my ultrasound was done, the tech said that my sac was too small.  I then went into the room and my doctor came in and told me to go to the hospital to do a hcg test.  My results was 1175, then I repeated it 48 hours later and my results were 1249, they did not double.  I went back on Friday to have another ultrasound and the tech told me again that nothing has changed since wednesday.  Once again, I talked with the Doctor, she told me I will have a 97% chance of miscarriage.  I am not bleeding, cramping.  My breasts are still very tender, I still feel nausia on and off.  What should I do? I have a recheck on Thursday, the 16th for another ultrasound and hcg level.  Is there anyone out there that went through this and had a healthy baby?

by duehring, Mar 12, 2006 12:00AM
To: bigmommy
I have had a sac that was too small and everything turned out fine. However, I think that fact that your hcg only went up a little is a very bad sign. I never had my hcg's drawn when my sac measured small so can't compare that.
In my experience, when the sono looks questionable and then the hcg's don't come close to doubling, I have always miscarried. My last miscarriage the sono looked questionable and they did hcg's and they only went up about half of what they should, I was still feeling very pregnant and no signs of m/c. I started to miscarry about a week later.
I am sorry you are going through this. I know how hard it is. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Hello- I am a bit worried about my first doctors appointment- I am not sure how many weeks I am- But I told my doctor my last period was at the end of dec- He took my blood test and went to listen to the heartbeat and heard nothing. The doctor said that I may be less than 10weeks pregnant and to not hear a heart beat is normal. They took my HGC Level and on Friday it was at 7800-(which I have no ideo what this means) My doctor wants me to come in tomorrow to do my blood test again- He keeps saying he thinks everything is okay BUT IS AFRIAD I MAY BE HAVING A MISCARRIAGE!!! I have not had any bleeding just some white discharge. I am very very worried and dont know what to think- I dont want to stress out but Im reading alot of the posts on this site and Know I am a bit stressed. Can someone please give some information on what to think or do. PLEAASEEEEE!

They will check your hcg to see if it is going up like it should. The only other thing they can do to see if everything is ok is to give you a sonogram. You should be able to see a heartbeat on a sonogram by now.

i am so very happy i stumbled upon this forum. i have been doing so much researching and nothing is helping me...my last period was feb 1st but my period normally comes on the 7th of everymonth. i took a home pc that was positive im not sure when but it was + my problem is this .... ive had 2 ultrasounds that have showed absolutley nothing except a "mass" on the left side immediatly they told me i possibly had or having a m/c or an ectopic(tubal) pregnancy. let me tell you the hospital i went to was ****... they really didnt explain anything to me. the first ultrasound was done 3/6 with a hcg of 200 and something then the 8th my hcg was 540 the 13th i returned to the emergency room because i was bleedin the 12th and 13th it was not heavy like a period by anymeans but i had a m/c in oct 05 and just wanted to know if this was happening again. u/s showed nothing so i asked is it maybe just still to early the nurse told me it was very unlikely. my hcg on the 13th was only 1000 something so it was 4 days between hcg counts so it took 4 days 4 my level to doubled my first and 3rd count where in the same lab my 2nd was a different lab. so anyways i got admitted yesterday and got released this morning i didnt want to stay but they insisted i didnt understand why the nurse said just to keep an eye one me because the suspect an ectopic pg so i was awakend to my ob telling me they were going to give me an Methotrexate injection i told them no now maybe that was stupid but i want to wait atleast one more week because i believe it may still be to early. anybody have any helpful info please please let me know anything is helpful oh and one more thing my ob told me that tubal pregnancys are very uncommom like 1% of ectopics are tubal ive been researching on the net and what ive found is that actually they are very common or so thats what several sites say anybody have any input on that matter? if infact it is common im switching ob i dont want an ob that dosent know what there talking about also he has me getting another hcg test on the 18th i would think it should be every 2 days

by NavyWifey2005, Mar 15, 2006 12:00AM
Is there a place on the internet that shows how far you are going by your HCg levels? I had a miscarriage in January and had a D/C.. I was completely healthy afterwards and didnt have a period.. negative home test and then all of a sudden it was positive.. I had a 240 level on 3/7 and then 500+ on 3/9 and at 10am today I had 6328.. Why so high in just 6 days?? How far along does that make me? I have an U/S on 3/28

Thanks!

Hi Guys

As per my previous post, i had my D&C as scheduled and was asked back to the hopsital yesterday as the results from the labs were in. The blood test yesterday still seems to show a low HCG level after the D&C and normally this should be a zero. The D&C did not show up any pregnancy as such only preganancy tissue. They now still think there may be a small ectopic pregnancy and are thinking of Methotrexate. Has this happened to anyone else. I am so tired...this is my 6th week since i had a incomplete miscarriage.

Thanks for reading

Hi Everyone,

First of all, I hope that all of your pregnancies are going well and I wish you all the luck in the world!

This is my third pregnancy and it came as a big surprise to me and my husband since I was taking the mini pill. Of course, it was a big shock to us since we just had our second child just 9 mos. ago. But we saw it as a blessing and if God wanted us to have a third this way, then it was meant to be. My 1st test 3/6 confirmed being pregnant; hcg levels 75, 1-2? wks into it. On 3/9, I started to spot bleed. It was brown, pink and then red by Sat 3/11; another test was done hcg levels at 104 now. The on-call Dr. said it doesn't look good and that she'd give it a 10% shot and that it we'd just have to wait & see on Mon. This news was devistating, how could this happen? Mon 3-13, my hcg were 143, rising but still not good enough. Again, told it may not be a viable pregnancy and it doesn't pay to have more tests done this week and have another on Mon 3/20. I am going out of my mind at this point...the waiting is really hard! One min. I think pos and the next neg. At this point, why won't they try to attempt to see something on an ultrasound. They just give me the runaround that you can't see anything until your hcg levels are at 1200 or more. My records show that I am almost 7 weeks into the pregnancy and it seems like many of you are having ultrasounds earlier or at the same weeks as me and are getting answers? Does anyone have any suggestions?

by want2bamommy, Mar 25, 2006 12:00AM
I had my last period on 02/23/06. My hcg was 38, then declined to 17. However, the 1st time was on 03/17. The qualitative serum hcg was slow positive. The second one on 03/24 was strong positive. I don't know what's going on. I'm scared. I can't see the OB/GYN until I am 8 weeks. My primary says the pregnancy isn't viable but, she won't order any other tests. Am I suppose to just sit & wait for a miscarriage? What if it's an ectopic pregnancy? Please respond. Thanks.

by MJS812, Mar 27, 2006 12:00AM
Hi everyone. I have a new question. I am around 5 wks pregnant, and have had sore breasts since ovulation, cramping for the last 2 weeks, and queasiness on & off for 2 weeks. My doctor says all of these symptoms are normal in pregnancy & nothing to worry about, unless I see bleeding, which I have not. However, I am noticing the queasiness is lessening, and my breasts are not as tender as they were. The cramping seems to be a little less too. Does this mean something bad? Is it normal for symptoms to come & go this early on? I thought as the HcG levels increase in the 1st trimester, your symptoms increase too. Why are my symptoms waning now? I am worried. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

by want2bamommy, Mar 29, 2006 12:00AM
I have been on pins & needles since my low hCG. I still feel very pregnant. The doctor didn'd schedule any type of follow up. She said "either you have m/c or you will". I haven't had any spotting, cramping, etc. Tomorrow I will be five weeks. I went ahead & made an OB appt for 04/20, I will be approximately 8wks? If anyone has any comments please do. Thanks!

by niffer76, Apr 05, 2006 12:00AM
I was hoping for some advice. I miscarried in oct. and am pregnant again. I'm 10 weeks this sat.  My Progesterone levels were low, the dropped from 14 to 11 in about a week but the doctor said not to worry because my hormone levels went from 6,000 to 42,000. I'm on a progesterone supplement (crinone) and i know that you can have a discharge from the "left over" medicine. My problem is its a brownish color all of the sudden. Is this something i should worry about. I have my next appt. in 7 days. I dont know if i should call or go to the ER. I'm so worried. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks
