The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that only vaginal medications, such as creams or vaginal suppositories, be used for yeast infection treatment during pregnancy. Pregnant women should not use nonprescription medications without first discussing their symptoms with their health professional.
The most effective nonprescription medications that have been studied for pregnant women with yeast infections are clotrimazole (such as Gyne-Lotrimin), miconazole (such as Monistat), terconazole (such as Terazol), and butoconazole (Femstat).
Many experts recommend 7 days of vaginal treatment during pregnancy.
In the past, nystatin (such as Mycostatin) was the drug of choice for the first trimester of pregnancy, but now all vaginal medications are considered safe during pregnancy. Oral medications are not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Thanks guys.........that eases my mind a lot!!!! I have another question, though, does your progesterone level increase when you are pregnant??? I had to have mine tested this morning, but it's still too soon for a HPT. I just wondered if it comes back high, would this be an indicator for a pregnancy???
O.k, OB called back and said that my progesterone level was 22.3. The norm is around 15, but she said in no way does this mean pregnancy. Bummer..........She said it just meant that I ovulated really well. Does this mean I could have released more than 1 egg??? Is that possible??? I'm just very confused and not being very patient at this point. We found out yesterday my DH has to have open heart surgery to correct a valve problem and he is only 27. My MIL is having surgery tomorrow for possible breast cancer and we just need some good news right now! Sorry for the vent, but sometimes life just throws you too many curves.
I hear you Emma! It can be really tough sometimes, but we just have to keep on going. You'll get your turn soon, I'm sure. I'm with you though, I've had a REAL rough 3 YEARS! Still no luck yet with anything good but I just need to stay positive.
About the progestrone. How did they test for that? Blood? And what CD should you be on to test that (meaning after ovulation) to see if you did ovulate. If you are a 32 cylce, what cd should you test? I just got a bunch of blood work done today too to chk my fertility and all. I'm only on CD11 but I'd like to go in towards end of cycle to chk for Ovulation.
BTW- your progestrone level is GREAT! Must feel good to know you are at least ovulating.
Oh gosh you ahve so much on your plate right now! I have my fingers crossed that you get a BFP in 2w's!!
You know what would be fun? And annual Medhelp Maternal-Child Forum get together in some fun place! Where we could all meet those we are praying for for BFP's and those who were blessed with them AND those with new little bundles! Hmm..maybe one day...
Steph - I am on a 28 day cycle and I went in on day 13 from the first day of my LMP to see if I was ready to ovulate. They did an ultrasound and said that my ovary looked ready and so they gave me a shot of HCG. I ovulated within 24 hrs. He wanted me to come back in a week, which would have been day 20 to see what my prog. level was. This was the first time I had ever done this.
I didn't ovulate last month and it caused me to have a cyst. That's why he brought me in this month to get the HCG shot.
What kind of blood work are you having done?? I know your prog. level goes up when you are preggo, so that's why I was hoping it in some way indicated that. But of course she said it didn't.
Kassimom - I'm with you! That sounds like a good idea! I sat in the Dr's office yesterday with women who were complaining about being pregnant and complaining about having to take the sugar test.....I thought...I would give anything to be in thier place right now! This site is wonderful and full of alot of supportive women.
Has anyone ever had pink (light bleeding after using cream for yeast infection? My story is I thought had yeast infection, so I bought cream and 1st day fine, 2nd day at night had pink bleeding and next day. I thought possibly implantation bleeding b/c it was 7 days after I thought I ov'd(had sex during this time also). I also had a cyst on ovary and thought maybe it ruptured and caused bleed but other people have told me when their cysts rupture they didn't experience any bleed. I took pg test, neg and started af on 2/16 with 1 day of severe cramping priorday for about 1/2 hour and next day started af. Never had those kind of cramps. Sorry sooo long. Either cream meds, implant bleed or ruptured cysts and ideas? Thanks
I seem to be suffering from another yeast infection! (I'm not pregnant, by the way.) I had used Canesten in the past with no improvement, so I didn't want to do that again. Last time, I had a horrendous infection that only Diflucan was able to cure (and only after four doses!), but this one seems still mild so I haven't asked for the pills yet. So, I thought I'd try a different brand that has a different chemical, seeing as the chemical in Canesten seems to do nothing for me. So I bought Monistat. Used it for the first time last night. I got the pack with three ovules and the cream. Ever since I used it, my symptoms have been MUCH WORSE! Is this supposed to happen? I've only had it in my system less than 12 hrs and already the itching, burning etc is 100 times worse than what it was... it almost seems like it's causing a yeast infection. Has anybody had this problem with Monistat? I don't know if I should continue the three day dose or go straight to the clinic and ask for the pills... what does everyone suggest?? It says on the Monistat pamphlet that 'side effects are very rare, but you may experience some worsening of itching or burning when you begin treatment'... why would this be? It almost seems like an allergy.
This is in response to Nikl's post. I am 26, not pregnant and had a yeast infection recently. I took the 3-day Monistat. Im past the 3 days now and still feel a bit itchy. Dont know if this stuff really works or not. But in terms of the bleeding...I have experienced light pink bleeding also. I dont know where or how it is happening. I inserted the capsule as far up as i could, but i dont see how it would cause the bleeding. I am guessing the medication is making my vaginal walls or something sensitive, thus causing the light pink excretion. Anyone else experienced this? I dont know what to think. I have had yeast infections in the past, and never this pink bleeding. Anyone have suggestions as to what it might be from???
I dont have medical right now, so this is a concern for me....
I know this is in response to an old post, but I wanted to comment on the use of creams and spotting. I am TTC and began using terazol cream for a yeast infection on day 16 of my cycle. I began getting menstrual cramps and had a little bright red blood. It wasn't enough to show on a pantyliner, but when I wiped I could see. Then there was some discharge a little bit darker, but still it wasn't a lot. Now I have used the cream for 4 nights, and this morning I had more pink streaks when I wiped, you know as the medication comes out. Also the cramps continue, which I was hoping was due to possibly being pregnant, but I'm thinking it may just be due to the terazol. Anyone have any input on this?
Vaginal yeast infections are common in pregnant women, likely caused by the high hormone levels. Treatment to cure a yeast infection during pregnancy may take longer.
