a few questions

by shubunkin, Feb 09, 2005 12:00AM
I went for my visit with the dietican today. The foods really are not that restricted. Just have to watch the amounts. I ate 2 peices of low carb toast and an egg this morning when I got up. When I got there she showed me how to take my reading and it was 75. That was 2 1/2 hours after eating. I have taken it twice after dinner just out of curiousity and it was 89 1 hour after lunch. I took it again about 45 minutes ago and it was 85. Do these reading sound normal to anyone how has knowledge about diabetes? The finger sticking does not hurt at all! I was very suprised and happy! At least I only have to deal with it for another 10 weeks!

I dont know what kind of glucose monitor you were giving (im from Canada) mine was to be taken a hour after you ate and it was to be under 7.8   and in the morning under 5.4   Maybe its some other type of monitor
Once you get onto the amounts you can have  its not too bad

wow your monitors must be very different from the ones here in the U.S. if i had a glucose reading on our monitors here of 5.4 i would be unconcious.....possibly on my way (if not there) to being dead.
normal range on a U.S. monitor (if i remember correctly) is 70-110.  a fasting low should be maybe a little lower but if you get much below 60 you'll know it. it is one of the worst feelings i have ever had the misfortune of having to experience.

I'm from Canada as well and have gestational diabetes.  Right now my sugars have to below "5" in the morning and lower than "7" one hour after eating.  I had to go on insulin already and am only 8 weeks pregnant.  The difference between US and CDN systems is that you have to divide your US number by 18 to get our CDN number.  Vice versa when we determine the US reading: multiply our numbers by 18.  Your numbers sounds good from what your saying.  As a rule though, with gestational diabetes according to your system(US numbers): should be below "90" in the morning and below "126" one hour after eating.  Always test one hour after eating.  I tried the low carb bread this morning for the first time and can't believe how low my numbers are.  When I was eating regular %100 whole wheat bread, my numbers just shot up there.  Good luck with everything.//June
